1998 993 flywheel
Just purchased a 1998 993, the first trip to a shop I was told that the flywheel, clutch is bad and need replacement. This based on a rattle noise made when the engine was turn off. The car has 39K miles. Any input on this?

You might think about replacing it w/ a 964RS single mass version, these have been used right up through the latest 997GT3RS, the only drawback is the potential for some extra noise that is most evident when the engine is lugged

At this point I am considering a second opinion. Requesting recomended shops in the Houston, Galveston area.

It may sound like you throwing some quarters in a dryer when you shut down the engine.

The OEM dual-mass flywheels do not last forever and I've seen premature failures caused by excessive heat or driving technique. The RS single-mass one is very durable, as Bill suggested, and its a major performance improvement, as well.

Now in 993 land ...

I have the RS flywheel and can attest to it being solid. It does however chatter at times, that's on the first clutch (by PO) and the second (by yours truly). The chatter is normal at idle. If you mind noises, don't get it.
