Fender Oil Cooler 3.0 SC, Get a Mocal? or Carrera?
I can't decide. Is there any difference/advantages/dis-advantages to either?
I can get a Carrera front fender oil cooler used, or a Mocal new for about the same money. I'm leaning toward the new one. And I'll put a fan in, too. I just don't know how they compare. Anyone had either or both?

The Carrera cooler is built more robust than the mocal. The Carrera cooler has a thicker core than the Mocal. That being said, either one needs to have a stone shield to protect them from rocks.
I think if you compare a 60 row mocal to the carrera, the efficiency will be remarkably close, especially with a fan. But the 60 row mocal does present some fabrication challenges, whereas the oe set up has brackets, stoneguard, hoses available that connect right up to the oe lines. tip on the electric fan- e bay 7" for around $30-45

I installed the Mocal a couple of months ago, went in easily, by my work scale for difficulty a 2.
I will fab a stone shield and add a fan later if I need it. (No traffic jams around here...) Car runs a little cooler than with the trombone.

My 81 had a Mocal in it when I bought it in 1995. I have seen nine o'clock ONCE when beating the snot out of it in Houston in 1997.
You will be happy with either. I would go with the Carrera cooler with fans, BECAUSE of the fans. Double check the lines from the long brass tubes to the cooler. They get tired. |

Mine had a Mocal when I bought it. I've had no issues with it over heating since getting it, but I had to fab up a stone guard. If I were to be making your decision, I would have went with the Carrera since it is engineered for this application. The kits Elephant make are seriously impressive.
Edit: Also, thanks for the fan tip Dave. I'm definitely saving this thread in my "future mods" folder on my computer. |
