Sneed Insurance - the end of the line. Any other good classic car insurers?
And by good, I mean (1) low cost and (2) can occasionally drive car to work.
I've had Sneed for 10+ years on various collector cars. Currently have 2 insured with them, 80s Porsche 911 and Ferrari. The current premium is around $500 yr/both car. Sneed allows driving to work (I use the Porsche fairly regularly, Ferrari never). Sneed was "sold." It took me a while to figure out exactly what that means, but this is what it looks like. Sneed was actually just a servicer of policies, the policies were actually underwritten by American Modern. Sneed was sold to "American National." American National sells an insurance product called "CHROME." Not sure if the policy is underwritten by CHROME, or what. But American National is apparently the new servicer with a new product. If you have a current Sneed policy, underwritten by American Modern, it stays in place until it expires. Before that expiration, you'll be contacted by someone from American National/CHROME with an offer for a new policy. My policies doesn't expire until mid next year, but I got a phone message from the new company offering to start a new policy with them. The premium will be 3X as much. $1500 instead of $500. Anyone have any good collector policies that are relatively inexpensive and allow at least some driving to work? |

Well, collector car ins has been discussed many times in 911 tech so I don't see a need to move it unless you want the Bimmer guys to see your thread.
A good friend of mine has Hagerty and got a hell of a price, agreed value and not so many restrictions. I've called around and not done all that well over my USAA policy that lets me do anything except track work. |

I live in New York City and so only have 1 car other than the 911. Since I have 2 adults in the house, the classic car insurance companies won't cover me since I don't have at least one car other than the 911 per adult.
Anyone find a way around this problem? I only drive the 911 recreationally since I use public transportation 99% of the time - so the risk is the same.

Grundy
When I got my collector car insurance I checked with both Grundy and Haggerty. Grundy was cheaper at the time.
Their policies are not mileage restricted for "recreational use" but I don't think you can use them for work. The policies are "agreed value" and automatically rise a certain percentage every year ( I think 2%-3% if I remember correctly). You can freeze the value if you like. Check with both of them and compare. The Grundy carrier is Philadelphia Ins. Co. which is a triple A rated company. If you carry a Personal Umbrella policy with your other carrier you'll need to check with them to make sure they accept the new carrier on the Umbrella policy. Usually they'll require a AA or AAA company. |

+14 for Hagarty
I talked on the phone to 4 insurers, Hagarty was in the middle, I asked verbally and then confirmed reading the policy closely that I was completely within my right to drive my "toy car" as I saw fit (i.e. to work once in a while, to dinner with my wife, to car shows, etc). They must have softened those restrictions as my own search turned up lots of "Hagarty won't let you drive your car except off the trailer at the car show" posts? I'm another that can't comment on claims but Allstate wanted $400 every 6 months as opposed to $148/yr for Hagarty (and that's with my other 2 cars AND my house with them) for the same stated value policy. And I don't trust Allstate any more than anyone else to payout without an argument. (my middie Franken-Porsche is probably worth $10k on a really good day and I have it insured for $12k just for reference YMMV)

i use state farm for all my insurance. the 911 is on a classic collector policy with a few restrictions, namely that i must run classic plates (25+ yr old), under 5k miles a year and i must have another vehicle. car is insured for $35k and the cost is $128 a year. other than that there are no restrictions.
technically in ohio classic plates have their own restrictions. car shows, parades, group events and the like are allowed but not everyday usage. to this day i have never heard of anyone being stopped for no reason other than plates. what is also allowed are test runs, and i can always find something that needs testing on a 25+ year old car. hell, earlier this year i had to make a test run to a casino in new york. luckily everything tested out fine.

I recently called several classic car insurance companies to get phone quotes and for my cars in the area I'm moving to ( Georgia ) Grundy looks like the best choice.

A friend just purchased a 993 and called Haggerty for a quote. They asked him if he would ever drive the car out of state and he replied perhaps the odd trip to Eureka Springs, AR (about 2.5 hours drive from here) and they declined to quote. Unbelievable. What if you lived in Kansas City on the border between KS and MO?

that's exactly what I meant by reports all over the map, there's an "approximately 5k/yr" mileage limit (although the rep I talked to said they didn't ask for mileage) I actually told him I live sandwiched between P-cola, FL and Gulfport, MS and have every intention of driving it to car shows in both states...."no problem"
The contract doesn't say anything about out of state driving.

actually it was. they asked me the value of the car, i quoted them something that i knew would cover anything at all that happened to the car including a total loss, they accepted the amount and the policy was written. nada is the only place that gives estimates of value for cars over 25 years old and currently they value my 83sc at $17.5 to $26.6. after completing several thousand dollars worth of updates and upgrades to the engine and installing a completely new interior my agent never questioned the agreed upon value. if the time should ever come that i will have to deal with a total loss it would not be hard to exceed the agreed upon value of $35k. just to buy a targa top from a dealer is about $10k. the policy is not like a normal car where an aftermarket part can be used in place of a factory part.

I have my insurance through USAA, but the collector policy is underwritten by American Modern, as you know it allows occasional use for to work. I don't know if you qualify for USAA or not.
