Another cheap possibility to reduce targa top wind noise
 

Hi everybody,

I am a new member of this forum from Germany. I read a lot of threads about wind noise caused by the front seal of the targa top.

I had the same problem. Since my car is about 40 years old (Porsche Targa 1973.5), there is a little gap between the front window frame and the targa top. Wind is entering the gap and causes a strong wind noise.

I learned in one of the threads that Porsche used to sell an additional seal with the shape of a P-profile to reduce the wind noise (Part no. 911.799.565.25). This seal was mounted between the front window frame and the front targa seal. The P-shape of the seal closed the gap between the window frame and the targa top.

Unfortunately, Porsche does not sell this seal anymore.

I fount a cheap alternative, which I bought in my do-it-yourself market around the corner.
It is a seal used for the insulation of windows. It has almost the same shape and dimensions as the former seal from Porsche. It has a sticky side and can be glued easily to the window frame. It can also easily be removed. Here is a pic of the seal:

The seal costs about 10 Euros (about 12 $ for 6 m) and is installed in 5 Minutes. Only disadvantage: it is only available in brown or white.

Yesterday I drove on the German Autobahn and did a test. There was a significant noise reduction. However, there still is a wind noise, which is typical for all old Porsche Targas. They will never be completely silent as a new Porsche.

Does anyone wants to see a pic of the installed seal?

Yes please. A picture would be great.

And the noise is the only thing I hate about my 911. Mine is so loud that it souds like there is a fighter jet idling in the passenger seat at speeds over 60MPH. :)

as you can see, the seal fills the gap between the targa top and the window frame.

Interesting! Must try this...

I use some 5/16 x 3/4 weather stripping to basically do the same thing to stop my top from leaking. I guess the old seal was pretty much collapsed after all these years.
The stripping seems to be working, no more water pouring in from the front. I also used some on the back seal along the Targa bar, much better than it was. I was pouring in before.

Got the weather stripping at Autozone.
