Is sorting this mess out more trouble than it's worth?
1 Attachment(s)
I own a 1980 Euro 911SC, the vin# is 91A0130707. The two previous owners had the car registered and titled (TX and NC) as a 1979. I also registered the car in RI as a 1979 to keep things simple. Something that bothers me is the import tag on the drivers side door pillar. It says the car was manufactured in 1978 (see attached pic). I was thinking about trying to correct all the documentation to officially register the car as a 1980.
Can someone please run a CARFAX report on the vin number to get me started? I did a search in the archives and found a good post that SeaDweller originated on 6-11-2001. Thanks! |
Carfax can only be used on 1981 and newer cars when the Vin #'s were standardized to 17 digits. Interestingly, I also have a 1980 Euro located in NC, where the previous owner thought it was a 1979. That's the way it was registered. My Vin is 91A0131074.

Rob, did you register it as an 1979 or 1980?

A lot of cars were physically manufactured in the calendar year prior to the year of their actual model. How else could you buy a 2002 model in the fall of 2001, which is very common. My '87 Carrera was made in Sept. of 1986.

Richard, I agree with a 1 year difference but the import tag says 1978 for the year built v.s. a 1980 vin #? That's the problem.

Look at it on the bright side... you qualify for "no smog check" one year earlier!

John,
I registered mine as a 1980. I think all I did was tell the lady at the DMV that it was a 1980. That's it. I no longer have a build date sticker or import tag on my car, so I don't know when it was made. I can only go by the VIN which says it's an '80. -Rob 1980SC |
As an aside, it my my understanding that, by definition, a model year can have only one January in it. As a result, a model year can start in (say) February 1978 and end in December 1979.
