Reds available in 1969?
What red was available in 1969 on the 911 T Targa? Mine is red but looks a little orange and I know some early Porsches were painted Blood Orange. But then theres the popular guards red, and I'm thinking maybe the sun made the red discolored. Gards red looks very nice, but I guess any red looks nice with all the chrome on the early 911s. The certificate of title only says "red". Is there a book I can buy with this information?

There are several books with this info. The best cheap inexpensive one is Patrick Paternie's Porsche 911 Red Book, which lists Burgundy Red, Polo Red, and Dark Red Metallic as the available colors - you'd need the paint code to ascertain which red yours is. Guards Red didn't make the scene until the mid-70s, btw, though tons of misguided early car owners have their cars painted that shade.

I second the recommendation on Patrick's book - a good auth guide. Also Dr. Johnson's book...

For the last 2 years I've been trying to track down the original color (6851-L) for my 911E. Everywhere that I've looked I've seen red - inside the trunk, under the car, under the dash. Everywhere. That table says that my car was originally Silver Metalic?
![]() Hmmmmm...... I guess that I'll find out for sure when I strip the paint off the car in a couple of years.

What other information is in Patrick Paternie's Porsche 911 Red? Whats the book with information on original early Porsche equipment? I'm going to order some stuff online and want to find out all the books I need before I order.
It might have been Tangerine. Tangerine looks like the "red" my car is, I'll call my dad today at 6 when he gets home and ask him to check. Last edited by Porsche911T; 05-22-2002 at 12:04 PM.. |

I got the number
97-6806-L Looks like my original color is "irish green" and the color inside the door was the original color. I don't know what I should do. I guess I'm going to keep it red because that's what's under the certificate of title, I'll probably go tangerine because that's what it looks like. Can someone send me a picture of a Porsche in POLO red? How about tangarine? I would like to compare. I don't think this dark green would look too nice. What do you guys think? |

This photo taken at Dunkel's swap meet this year shows a tangerine early 911 in the foreground and what appears to be a polo red early 911 in the background, alongside a guards red 80's 911.
