No, it is almost identical to the 901/911 transmissions.
Most of the internal parts are physically interchangeable with the 901/911. The 914 (-4) parts were not manufactured to the same (high) quality standards as the comparable 911 (and 914-6) parts. The side-shift 914 parts are better than the 911 nose-shift mechanism. I can shift my well-set-up 914-6 side shifter far better than any 911 I have raced. Best, Grady

Only if you like 5 reverse gears....you'll need to flip the ring gear and change external parts.

I have never seen a 914 side-shifter installed in a 911 but it would be a great addition to an early 911 racer.
My 914-6 racer has almost exactly the same system (abet a bit longer reach shafts). It shifts far better than any 911 I have raced. This shift system is similar to Porsche’s 908 and 912 (917) systems. I find it discouraging that Porsche didn’t include this in the 901 design. Too bad that the 901 designers were ‘married’ to the VW & 356 nose-shift design. Best, Grady
