Well...after mucho consideration coupled with some intervening developments that I won't go into here, I've decided to keep the Carrera and pass on the GT3.

In this case, the head overruled the heart...with me and cars, that doesn't happen often! :)

I really, really appreciate everyone's input.

Jack,

That is one beautiful car. I understand the allure of a GT3, but you car is the perfect street car. Classic, fun, and driver involved!

Another (final) update...

It's a very long story that I won't go into here, but my long-time Porsche friend and I finally made the trade - his GT3 for my backdated '87 Carrera.

Here's two current pics of the GT3. It is an amazing Porsche, a totally different animal than the Carrera or a regular 997. "Animal" is a pretty good description.

Phenomenally beautiful car...both.
Congratulations on the trade....both of you came out on the plus side.

Keep ties to your 87 if you can, you may want it back someday!

I have permanent visitation rights although whenever the mood strikes I'll have to travel a few hundred miles. The Carrera went to a great home, the new owner is a die hard Porsche enthusiast whose "other" P-car is a beautiful Tangerine 914-6. Our friendship goes back over 40 years.

Had finances permitted, I would have kept the Carrera as well. Trying to make that happen was one of the reasons that getting the GT3 took so long.

What an awesome dilemma to have.

Both are awesome cars. I believe there was no wrong choice in this matter and hope you will enjoy the GT-3 to the fullest.

Congrats.

Would the Tangerine 914-6 happen to have a turbo 3.2?

SilberUrS6 07-29-2013 08:39 PM

I wouldn't.

I like these cars for what they are. And even the most lopsided trade for some newer or different brand car? I wouldn't.

I don't think you should either, but it's not my car or money. And the fact that your friend is making the choice in the other direction should inform your decision.

So anytime you want a ride in your old Carrera you have to take your new GT3 out for a few hundred miles? Sounds like a pretty good deal to me. I'm sure you'll easily find you're way back into a Carrera if you ever get the itch.

It's a 2.2, here it is.

Congrats - nicely done. I hope you enjoy the GT3 - it is a lot more car than your Carrera.

Now get that hideous stripe off the side. ;)

I was waiting for someone to mention that. It was delivered to me that way. Here's a older side view "without" - I think I prefer it this way as well. I'm not a "look at me!" kind of guy.

Here the one you posted when you started the thread. Glad you agree! ;) Looks a lot cleaner. I am sure a hair dryer and 20 minutes a side and you should be back to the clean look! I would even take the badge off the back as well. Everyone knows what it is, and if they don't - well, nothing lost on them either!

Have fun with the GT3...

I think you made a good trade.

The prices on all decent manual transmission GT3's should stabilize (and possibly begin to appreciate) since the new GT3 is automatic only with electric steering, etc..

rattlsnak 07-30-2013 09:26 PM

I love the stripe actually, and let me know when you're near the shop, I want to go for a spin in that thing!

(keep the stripe!)

Hey, Marc, will definitely stop by when I'm in the neighborhood. SmileWavy

The stripe thing was another (small) conundrum.

When my friend installed the stripe right after he bought the car, he sent me a picture...I didn't care for it at all. In pictures, I really do think it looks better stripe-less. This is one of those cars that IMO really doesn't photograph very well, at least not with my pocket camera and limited skills. I think it looks much better in person than in pictures, especially as is.

Yesterday I was in the garage, had my heat gun in hand and was ready to start removing the stripes. I just couldn't do it. The car just looks too dang sexy like it is.

BTW, my brother is mad at me for letting the blue Carrera go. You guys did an amazing job welding the rear flares and aligning the rear bumper. I wish my budget had allowed me to keep it but I do have first refusal if my friend ever decides to let it go.

Matt Monson 07-31-2013 06:54 AM

I'm sorry for your loss.

J/k. You will love the GT3. Just not the choice I likely would have made.

Rodsrsr 07-31-2013 08:14 AM

Plus one on keeping the stripe. Way cool.

NYNick 07-31-2013 08:25 AM

Prediction:
You will sorely miss your Carrera in about a year. Nice GT3 tho!
Nick
