Here's a picture of what you should see on the pulley when setting the timing:

Walter,
Could my timing lamp giving the wrong result? Could the TDC mark on the wheel be wrong? It was maybe about -10 deg idle (vacuum connected) and seemed to only advance to about 25 deg initially. I thought the timing was retarded because my engine was fitted with Webers and was running to hot, even to not have an external oil cooler). I adjusted the distributor so it was able to advance to maximum 30 deg, maybe. I tried to set it almost back to where it was afterwards, and had the same issue again.

I'am sure I have the rotor pushed all the way down now, I don't now if that has always been the case though. I don't have play sideways in the shaft and it looks clean inside the distributor. I also put some drops of oil down the shaft and made a new "pillow" with oil for the shaft.

I can try to retard the timing again. I will get the "clicking" sound from inside the cap of the distributor again, when running at idle.

Remi,

It sounds like you are doing everything correctly.

The total amount that the advance can move should be between -5 and 30 for a total of about 35 degrees. That's how much you were getting from -10 to 25, so that sounds like your distributor is giving you the correct amount of advance. The question is why does yours like to be set so far retarded?

Can you take some pictures of your engine. Because someone changed it from the stock engine to a 2.7, I'm wondering if they swapped some parts and not others. Like maybe you have the old pulley on the new 2.7 motor?

The old and the new pulleys look the same to me:

Make sure that your rotor in the distributor is lining with the notch in the housing for #1 cylinder at Z1 mark. It will not line up perfectly as manual says, but should be close.
You can remove spark plug from #1 cylinder and insert a wooden dowel into hole and see if piston pushes the dowel all the way up when rotating engine. Just make sure wood dowel is not short enough to fall into cylinder.

Pics of TDC/Rotor etc

Here are the pics that I said that I would send. This is from a 70T, Bosch 008 distributor. If this is what your distributor looks like, in the TDC position, loosen up the distributor, turn on the ignition, and turn the distributor slowly until you hear a click, that is the points opening. That puts the timing exactly or very close to TDC. I turn the points counter clockwise until I hear the click of the points opening. Then, start the car and check to see how close you are to TDC and at that point, advance the timing, about 1/4 of an inch or about 5 degrees and that is real close to where you want to be. Drive it and see if makes a difference. If not, could be the advance, cap, rotor, etc. Good luck. Steve PS. I went to the Baltimore Gran Prix on Saturday (ALMS) and watched the Falken 911 GT3 win and recovered yesterday. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1346696318.jpg

Here is a picture of the distributor when the pulley is at the Z1 mark. Is it looking alright?

Could the rev limiter cause me problems and the clicking sound when retarded?

I will try the rotating the distributor when ignition on, until the clicking sound, and test driving again. Thanks a lot.

How about a video. A little search on youtube and here we go.

Remi, a picture a bit farther away would work better. We would be able to see if your #1 position is the same that is in my 2nd picture. Your pict does show it pointing to the mark on the distributor but cannot see if the distributor is in the correct position using the reference of the fan housing. Also, try the UTube video that Ed has posted above. Steve

I want to try a new rotor. Will the Bosch 911 602 929 00 fit my car? (2.7L 1975)

flash951 09-23-2012 05:27 AM

I've fitted a new rotor, the "clicking" sound is gone. Running bad under load still occurred. I've changed spark plugs "NGK BPR5ES". Problem "solved".

there wasa an excellent thread once with someone showing how to dissasemble clean and rebuild your distributor to make sure the advance weights dont stick. Does anyone have a link to that ? they even talked about how to mark the pullley in degrease so you could check your advance.

Does anyone still have link as search doesnt seem to be brining it up.

thx

Link is in post #25. There are other links at the end of that thread also.
