Porsche Crest Oil level gauge on 911S

Having a issue with my Oil level gauge.

When I start up my 911 the gauge shows full which is correct.

The problem is, when I shut off the car, the Oil level gauge stays at the top position or full mark.

If I tap it with my finger it will return to the bottom position which is what it should do.

So it getting stuck on full, position, is there a way to fix this so I do not have to tap the gauge when I turn off the ignition.

Thanks

Since tapping the gauge fixes the problem, it sounds like you may have a short in the gauge itself. My advice would be to send the gauge to PA or NH Speedo for repair. It's a cheap fix.

My oil level gauge starts at the bottom indicating empty. It does not rise to half until the engine oil is at operating temperature and engine idling. You should verify your oil level with the dip stick (engine oil hot, level, and idling) and about half way between the top and bottom mark is correct.

Your gauge or level transmitter is malfunctioning.

Your 911 is a dry sump car. When the car is cold, the tank level is low and the oil pumped by the scavenger side of the oil bypasses the circuit that goes to the cooler, then into the tank and into the pressure side of the oil pump. During this period, your gauge will read low. Once the car is warmed up (170F or higher), you have full flow into the cooler and into the tank which now feeds the supply side of the pressure pump. when the car is reving faster than idle, the level of the tank will fall and the level gauge will read low.

The ONLY time the gauge (and dipstick) will read correctly is when the car is fully warmed, on level ground and idling. If you car dipstick and level is full when the car is cold, you have too much oil in your system and it needs to be removed.

Here is a diagram of the oiling system for 911's.

Check and clean the electrical connections at the tank and gauge. Could just be a loose wire.

Porsche Crest Thanks for all the help

Fellow Pelicans,

Thanks you for all the help.

Using a volt ohm meter, is there a way to test the sending unit of the oil level meter to see if it is working properly.
