Windshield-3.2-964-993 -All the same?

My buddy bought what he thought was a windshield for his 993. Installer says it is for a 964. I thought they were all the same?

Am I wrong?

Perish the thought.

Don't have a full answer for you but I do know that the last year 3.2 screen is the same size as the 964 and is also larger than the earlier years 3.2 and all SCs.

Hope this helps (partly)

Regards

Ian

Thanks, Ian! I am just not cinvinced that the 993 screen is in fact, different.

I think it likely that the 964 and 993are the same size as I am fairly sure they use the same seal. Have you looked on PET to compare numbers?

They're all different with 89 being an odd year. 3.2 Carrera has gasket windshield with trim. 964 windshield has gasket with no trim and the body flange at w/s opening is slightly different with 89 being the transition year. 993 windshield is urethane set glass with trim snapped in last.

Search is your friend. Some have had luck updating a 911 w/s to 964 but just as many have not. Updating 911 to 993 urethane set glass seems to work better but is more involved.

Search may be YOUR friend, but I don't think it likes me.

I never get much back.

If the forum search isn't working for you then try google. Just add ", Pelican" to the end of your search string.

OK... Here is what I know from this forum.

The 3.2 and earlier windscreens all fit each other!

Except for the last of the 3.2s, just before the Carrera 2 (964). They are the same size as the 964 but with different trim.
The Carrera 4 (964) and 3.2 were being built side by side for the last year of the 3.2.

The 993 is different again as it's a glue in one like most modern cars.
You can use a 993 and its trim in an earlier car with no problem. I've seen it done on a 80 SC.

In an old thread a windscreen guy stated that the window apertures for all of the 911s was the same. I doubt this is true considering the issue people have been having fitting 964 windscreens in pre 88 cars.
The rear widows are different again. A 964 rear window and 964 trim are too big for an earlier car. Don't know about a 993 rear window.

I do know the rear tear drop side windows are the same for all cars. That means you can use a 993 seal in and earlier car with it's earlier glass. The 993 seal has no alloy trim. It's also cheaper than an earlier rubber trim that uses the alloy trim.

Goggle suggestion is good.

Or try these threads:

993 windshield.
Having problems with windshield upgrade to 964 style.
Windshield problems on Carrera

Lot of reading - and some very mixed results, seems like your options may be limited by your car, for 911's.

I intend to try the 993 windshield myself; few folks have had success with earlier cars with that.

But the 964 windshield is bigger than either the 911 or the 993 part it seems; some folks can get a 964 screen into a 911 and some can't.

I guess my buddy won't be trying to use the 964 screen in his 993. He has it for sale on our local PCA site.

$250 if anyone needs a good 964 windshield.

And I will definitely use the Google/Pelican trick. Thank you so much for that good idea.

Using ", pelican" will find anything, on any board or web site, that references "pelican" - for example, a thread on rennlist that mentions pelican in the post, or a page with a banner ad that has text that mentions the word "Pelican".

You can also restrict search results to those from a specific site (e.g. this one) by using " site:=pelicanparts.com" in the Google search string.
