hahahaha - -love this thread -- jumping in way late here

no ppi on 2 different Carrera 3.2s

I bought both at Weissach in Vancouver and that's where most ppis are done there.

Looking at my next car and probably will -- but like the fellow on page 1 said -- I also wanna show up with cash ready to deal so.......

fbeatty 06-16-2014 02:27 PM

Nope. Bought it from a member of my family. Funny part is I had looked at and suggested they buy it 5 years before (and obviously the did buy it). Nice part, it had been only driven about 500 miles in the 5 years until I bought it.

Absofreakinlutely ;)

Took it to a shop for the body only to check for rust. Car ran fantastic on my test drive and was only $12,000 in 2010 with records and manuel so I bought it. Still runs great now!

Really bought as a naive rookie, only had two broken headstuds, a completely shot second gear and few other great surprises. Lesson learned. To my credit, the po had actually glued one of the studs back in, haha. I know much better now. The car was a good price, WAS

Never have and probably never will.

Our buddy Frans fron NZ got a PPI from a Porsche dealer and still got the shaft. But I recon there was foul play involved.

No PPIs for me either.

Synchro Joe 06-17-2014 11:34 AM

Absolutely, even after reviewing the wervice records. PPI turned up about 5 items needing attention, which PO got fixed before the purchase. Well worth it.

On two other candiates, the PPI's turned up some real issues and saved me airfares, etc. to do in person inspection.

seller was asking $22k for my SC in 2013, got a PPI done, presented the long list of minor issues to the seller, agreed on $15.5k sight unseen, flew to pick it up and drove it back 700 miles

TheSt|G 06-17-2014 11:43 AM

I had a Post Purchase Inspection performed, turned out I was right on the money.

No PPI; middle of Canadian winter...didn't really even know what I was getting into (very new to the game at the time)...won the mini lottery- 1973 matching numbers transmission, MFI engine that I haven't even adjusted;)

amitch 06-17-2014 12:03 PM

No, when I got my 3.2 a year ago it turned out that I knew the owner before the current one. I talked to him and as the car had only done a few thousand kilometers since he had sold it, I just bought it. No issues have surfaced other than some normal 3.2 gearbox issues. No rust etc. Very happy with a great car that in the time I have owned it has increased in value by 50%!

Got 2 PPI's (yes 2) with thumbs up on the car I bought but will not get one in future.
It was sight unseen so first from the mechanic resurrecting the barn find, a second from PCA recommended expert and 7 miles later spent another 7K on various fixes that I am told were not detectable during a PPI (fuel pump about to go, electrical gremlins, new p-car owner shakedown fee etc.)
Before this I had a PPI done on another car but I knew before it started it would not turn out well. I basically wanted to pay the mechanic to teach me what to look for and he did.

Based on this and how I have learned so much I will not get a PPI in future. What other said, I will look at records, seller, car and drive it.

Also I doubt you will get a PPI to confirm/deny the critical stuff like VIN#'s throughout, was it stolen, mileage accuracy, opinion on value, confirm or deny rust etc. The rest you can mostly shake out yourself or it's small stuff

tomphot 06-17-2014 12:52 PM

I got a PPI in Nashville from a "respected" mechanic before I bought my 911.
What a joke - the car turned out to be very good but the guy gave me leak down and compression numbers - when I went to do some service on it, one of the plugs had not been removed for years as it was rusted on. Took a while but we got it off and everything has been fine since.

Bill Douglas 06-17-2014 01:48 PM

Yes, my SC got a PPI from RUF Great Britain.

The 911SC spare parts car I bought in crashed condition at an auction. I looked under it and saw the engine clean and shinny with new nuts and bolts everywhere AND SSIs with no heat staining. In fact they looked brand new. I suspect the car got crashed on the way home from a major make over. So I bought that on the cheap and sold off a large number of bits.

ganun 06-17-2014 01:49 PM

Nope, it needed everything

mikesride 06-17-2014 05:31 PM

Well I bought one thru a well respected dealer/broker. He brought it in to his shop and they found some tranny issues....he wouldn't sell me the car until the current owner fixed the issues. Flew from Home to Vegas to finish the deal and drive her home!

Cheap Insurance

A newbie at the time, I bought my first Porsche, a 356A that was a painted-over rust bucket. Lesson learned. After a 924 and then a 944, I was ready for my dream car and told myself a PPI would be mandatory. Glad I did, the first two candidates had subtle problems but the third, a powder puff, checked out like a charm, still no issues after an additional 80K miles and 22 years of enjoyment.

Nope. No PPI for me. No records either (except for one receipt found in the glove box). But five years later, with this car as my daily driver, I still think I got a good deal.

jakz 06-17-2014 08:22 PM

No ppi, no history, not 1 receipt, it is my first 911 (daily driver and only car) but i acted like i was a 40 years experience porsche mechanic guru and knew everything i had to know, that same day i memorized what vin numbers mean engine codes etc, made a check list, read and read pelican forums had my iphone ready for any quick check on the web, got the seller to drop the price 10k bought in the spot and the only bad thing so far that has not been my fault 1.5yrs later was a bubble in a brake line that got fixed right away. Fingers crossed
