New Targa

It's a pity about the front, the back, and the sides!

Thumbs up

Let me guess - this is probably going to be a topic with many different opinions expressed in it - +50 posts??

I personally think that this was a pretty cool idea - even though I don't see much practial use for the rear window opening..
I'd get one - if I could afford it...

Now - everyone else - fire away!

If I had a nickel for every time I thought, 'If only I could swing that back window open, and toss this beer at that freakin' tailgater.'

Um, it's great for groceries? Trips to the lumber yard? Children who want to climb out and play on the rear wing?

I kind of want to shake the guys making the decisions at Porsche these days. All-time record profits, but no money for a race program, and resources going for stuff like this -- making a 911 into a silly hatchback.

What are they thinking?

It will leak water and increase wind noise for owners who get it 20 years from now. Some day, we'll be discussing a $300 fiberglass fixed rear panel that someone's dreamed up to solve the problem.

Gotta disagree, Jack. There's some things Porsche is doing right these days and a new Targa is one of them. It's a great looking car - it's got the same lines as the 993 Targa - and who knows, maybe after 30 years or so of making a leaky/windy car, Porsche will have learned a few things.

I know a lot of folks don't care for the 996, but this is one I'd drive. I want more pics of it.

I'm the wrong guy to judge a Targa. I like driving in 'em, but I've never really liked the look of 'em.

And I don't hate all the new Porsche stuff. The longer wheel-base 997 Roland posted looked like a step in the right direction. Or at least the computer-faked version did. Who would've thought that less rear overhang on a 911 might look all right?

Maybe it's just the angle.

Maybe it's the lateness of the hour.

Wow, that 997 looks just like the Mitsubishi-Laser-Eclipse the kid down the street owns... I wonder if it comes with the optional 15" sub and flickering ground effects lights.

Does the redhead come with the Targa?
if so, it looks great.

Im very confused about this car.. so when the window swings up, does it stay there and you drive around like that or does it come completely off and you have to store it somewhere?

is the window glass or plastic? dropping it could be a problem.

Style and taste are all matters of opinion.
Someone once said to me opinions are like 'a-holes, everyones got one!'.
Whereas this sounds crude and aggressive it also makes sense!.
I personally like the new targa.
I also like the styling and concept of the Boxster. I think they could have done a better job of the rear end. But I guess they did'nt do such a bad job as it has paid their bills of late!.
The Boxster S with it's mid engine also seems to out handle equivalent powered 911's.
It seems a shame that they abandoned the 914 which with a bit of work would have become a mid engine 911!.
I think a mid engined air cooled 993 style car would have sold heaps in it's time!.
But then again what do I know!
