Question 86 Carrera Ignition?

I seem to be having similar problems as others with starting my 86 Carrera (although now I have another issue). After it has been sitting for a while, it starts rough, idles like garbage and backfires once or twice before settling to a nice idle. I can prevent this by blipping the throttle once or twice. This has been happening for several weeks and I have yet to find the issue. Any help here would be appreciated.

The other issue is this: The other day after going through this same routine and letting it warm up, I left work to drive home and noticed a bit of a hesitation upon accelerating. If I attempted to hold rpms constant it ran like a champ (at any rpm). BUT, if I tried to accelerate, if felt as though one of the cylinders was not firing. Is it not advancing? I pulled the distrib cap, cleaned it and the rotor (looked clean anyway) and played with the weights and they moved smoothly (what the hell are they for if the dynamic advance is electronically controlled?).

Any help here with the multitude of questions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I am sure 86ragtop will chime in here...

Check/tighten intake manifold bolts, replace plugs, check/replace (as appropriate) plug wires, check/replace fuel filter and air-filter.

Check/replace your DME relay (should always carry a spare), check/replace the one-wire Head temp sensor with later two wire type, check/replace O2 sensor.

Good Luck!
