911 "T" upgrades sought

Just picked up a 2.2/6 "T" motor that was running recently as May of this year. Nice set of Webers and price was good so I did not run leak downs or compression tests. I will be setting up a bench test station to do the tune and clean it up.

It has that funky elephant nose air cleaner system so I will be looking for a nice set of double air cleaners with rain shields as the install will be in a 914/6.

Any have any bolt on upgrade ideas? I will be removing the equal length heat exchangers and 911 style oil tank, so they are available to interested parties.

Please respond to MikeZ@all914.com

Thanks in advance.

Got it started on the bench and did a compression test. Carbs did the
overflow trick on the tubes.....rebuild time.....compression was 145 all
around. Not bad.....not great.

Gonna use this as a test bed for a hot rod 2.2....the local touring car club
has a 2.2 challenge. I wanna kick some rice booty with a 30 myear old 914/6.

Anyone have some good solid ideas without having to split the case? I have
no problem replacing cams and pistons and cylinders plus head work.....

Michael,
Sounds like a neat project.

You can upgrade to "almost an S" status by replacing the heads, pistons, rods and cam with S spec parts. This should get you up to around 180-200 hp.; perhaps a little more with some attention to detail. Weber specs for S engines are widely published. If you need them, I'm sure Warren can supply them to you faster than I can look them up.

Rod's too? What is the difference in rods? I am trying to do this bolt on w/o cracking the case....

Is porting polishing and unshrouding the heads really worth it on a small six banger?

You can remove the rods without cracking the case, I believe.

Hi Mikez

I have the same engine in my 71 911 Targa. I have been thinking of some modest performance upgrader too. You could go to S specks but i think that it would be cheaper bying an S engine instead of modifing your current T. 2.2S P&C are the most sought after and most expensive P&C sets. If i were you i would replace the cams with a set of E or Solex cams. That modifikation deos not require that you take the engine apart ie. the port size af the T and E heads are the same. I am thinking of duing that modifikation myself. If you want S by an S engine - easyer and cheaper.

Thanks Peter

OK.....stupid question. Why change out the rods? Different wrist pins on the "S" pistons or something?
