on road trip and need some CIS help/ideas

Hey guys so im on a 3 week road trip down from vancouver yo san diego via hwy 101. currently in eureka in cali and car has started stuttering as if its fuel starved. its a 75 911s with a stock cis 2.7. this has happened randomly through out the trip but its happening quite often now. doesnt stutter when im revving it in neutral , mainly in 4th 5th around the 3k revs mark and above up to this point when its happened its usually because my heater hoses have popped off and its usually resolved when i put them back in. i topped up my gas thinking it was bad fuel but this hasnt fixed it. latest thing was to reseat the airbox as it was slightly off. feels like a vacuum leak issue but nothing a pparent is loose... i didnt brong carb cleaner but was hoping you guys may have other things i could try to troubleshootthis. sorry im wrting this from my phone and theres limited reception. thx in advancr

I am no expert on CIS but have one on my 79 SC. No problems with it here. But I am reading about possible problems in the future. From what I read here a quick way to possibly find a vacuum leak is to spray cold starting fluid around all suspect areas. If a vacuum leak area is sprayed the reving should increase. You should be able to find that cold starting spay can in any auto parts supply store. Also from the olden days I remember, after checking the spark plugs the spark itself should be checked by removing the spark plug connector, one cylinder at a time and see whether there is a spark hitting the engine metal. Hold the spark plug with a dry towel or you get zapped.

I just found a thread in the 930 section where the voltage regulator - above 3000 - would send excess (18 volts) voltage to the CD box and create problems. Have not read of this before but if your lights get brighter as the rpms go up, may be worth looking into.

Have you considered the fuel filter ? If it older than a year, should be changed. A long trip may have broken loose junk in the tank and the filter is your friend. As the engine calls for more gas, if the filter is clogged, it cannot deliver the fuel needed. may not be what is going on but it is a simple fix. Carb/ Injector cleaner could help also and readily available. Good Luck !!

The last time I had some stuttering, I changed the plugs, fuel filter, and dist. cap and rotor. Don't know which one was the problem, but the problem went away. Just give it some fresh bits, which it probably needs anyway.

And don't forget to get new crush washers if you get a new fuel filter. Had to do that after connecting a new fuel filter on my 79 SC and noticed a leak with the old washers.

If you cross over the 80 bridge there is a good guy in Crockett under the end of the bridge!

His name is Pete, he did some work on my SC motor and has a 5 star rating on Yelp!

Thanks for the recommendations. The stuttering has gotten worse as trying to push for willits. so going to try find someone in santa rosa to check it out tomorrow. as Napa Autoparts in Garberville didnt hv the fuel filter in stock. Appreciate the part number!

If your still in Willits or further down 101 try to find a shop that is familiar with volkswagon. Have them pull each spark plug wire until they find which one is causing the miss. Pull the injector and clean it under pressure until you get a good spray pattern. You can get the rest of them cleaned when you return home.

Wow thanks for all the replies guys. Well car started backfiring pretty badly 10 miles from Willits Pulled over and tapped the fuel filter (gently) to see if the idle would change and it did so I think that could be teh reason. Need to find somewhere to change it over for me or try it myself. I have the 101 book and just worried if I attempt it myself might do more damage and screw up the rest of my trip.

was meant to do santa rosa and then fairfield for napa region but now might have to go straight to san fran if i can't find somewhere to do the change.

I actually have 2 spare injectors with me. I had them all cleaned approximately 7 months ago so I could potentially pull them and see if the spray pattern is right. Do I just have to pull it out by force or is there a bolt I have to undo?

Other issue that has developed is my rev meter is going crazy now... argh.. been running well up to now but i guess its to be expected on a long journey...

thanks for all the help again guys. If there are any pelicanites around that are free to help, I'll supply a 6 pack of ice cold beers

Tach trouble, missing above 3k, could be alternator or voltage regulator failing or loose fan belt. Change the fuel filter for sure, maybe other stuff will go away.
Good luck.

You may want to call Peter Wilms (M: 415-948-8189, O: 415-453-3501) in San Rafael which is on your way to SF.

Peter works on my '80SC and is a factory trained mechanic, a straight-shooter and knows CIS like the back of his (large) hands.

If you need any assistance in Marin, just PM me.

Good luck,
David
