Atlanta- CDI Check out (part 2)
I am still fighting a no start issue. i cross posted my most recent thread from the 930 forum below. Would anyone be willing to put my newly rebuilt CDI in their car to see if in fact it is ok? I would be more than happy to come to you at your convenience. Also is there another bench test, other than checking resistance on the primary and secondary winding, to confirm the coil is ok? me resistance #s are in spec.

can you tell me the range of year models that it fits?
|
6 prong CD is all SC s besides 78 and later Turbos

I am trying to remember there is a relay that is notorious on the 930s but I think it is for the fuel pumps. Its back in the engine compartment, i was helping a friend with an 87 and that turned out to be the problem.
I wonder if you call the folks who fixed the CD box and explain if they can walk you through a test. I suspect they will want it back though. |
The 87s have a yellow fuel pump relay next to the CDI that controls the rear pump. it is notorious for going bad. guys will jumper that relay to test it/get he car fired. i do not have that relay in my 79. I'm geeting fuel to the cylindars just no sparky. A 930 guy outwest said he would send me a good spare CDI he has to put in my car to see if it will fire, i just don't want to fry his CDI if there is something else wrong w/ my car that could potentailly fry it. if i could plug my CDI in another car and it is bad, i would send it back to ECU drs.

anyone up for me pluging my "pro-rebuilt" 6 pin CDI in their car to see if the CDI is actually working?

I got sick of trying to test individual parts both in and out of the car so I put it all together on a jig on the bench and hooked it up with some temporary wiring.
The pic shows a Permatune CDI and an MSD coil, but I also ran this with the Bosch parts to check that they were OK as well. I managed to confirm that all my components were OK and narrowed the problem down to wiring and a dodgy speed relay. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1345873545.jpg |
I'm liking the jig. Well done Bill

wow that is clever. Argh, wish i could help

Nice set up Bill. i like the flex boot on the green wire on the end where it plugs into the distributor.
where is the speed relay you found to be bad? |

It is in the fuel pump circuit, so doesn't affect the ignition. It cuts the fuel pumps if it isn't feeling well! |
It is perfectly save to put another CDI into your car as long as your battery is OK and alternator doesn't go up to 17 volts when you rev the engine.
Test-firing a 6-pin can be done with a AA battery. Negative to the trigger wire and positive to GND of the car. Hook up GND, +12V and coil primary to the CDI. Spark plug to secondary of coil. |
Chris let me put my CDI in his car and it did start so i can rule it out. someone on the 930 board sent me a spare coil, rotor, green wire to try out.
