996 redesign rumors...
I was at the Danville Porsche show this weekend. A guy there who seemed to know his stuff said that the Porsche designers are very unhappy with the 996 body style and are planning a complete revamp for 2004.
He heard they plan to keep the basic 996 headlights, but give it a longer, lower hood and return to rear fender flares. Has anyone else heard this?

If it's true it's becoming more and more the rear engined 928 that 911 lovers originally called the 996.
Did your man hear anything about them building a modern 911? Viz a fast sportscar with a small footprint instead of a fat GT? (I accept the GT2 is a sports car but it's huge compared to a 2.7RS)

That pic looks like a 550 Maranello with 996 headlights

Exactly my thoughts except the headlights are from a Carrera GT. |

I like it - I think Porsche needs to purify the lines a little with the introduction of the pepper. IMHO 911 should be more performance driven GT - more to compete with the Ferrari, Corvette, Viper, etc. They need more HP on the standard model - 400 should do it. Increase the displacement to 4.0 or Flat 8 if needed.
Boxster should be positioned more on line with the next tier. Honda S2000, BMW Z3, etc import beater. I believe a good move on the Boxster would be to offer a Club Sport Model. 3.4 or 3.6 996 engine, rip every ounce of weight out, flare the fenders so you can put some major meaty tires on it, lower the gear ratios to get some insane 0-60 times and price it right. Then offer the GT Carerra for the money set - Flat -10 engine - race series, etc. The pepper for the masses, or those driven to the idea of having an SUV... ![]() Not that anybody asked - |
