Pics of my first 911

Hello all,

Since I started looking to buy my first 911 a few months ago, this forum has been very useful for my pre-buy research. Three weeks ago I finally made my move on this 1987 Targa in Guard's Red:

I decided the best way to get to know the car was to take it on a 2000 mile road trip to visit my parents. With 20/20 hindsight, this was a big risk since most of the trip was through the Canadian maritime provinces where Porsche doesn't even have dealerships and garages don't know these cars. Luckily I only made two visits to garages. One was to replace the old rubber after this happened:

The other stop was to replace the battery because the car wouldn't start but it turns out it's a solenoid issue. Won't start when hot sometimes! So I made it from my home in Montreal to Nova Scotia and back again in a 26 year old car that was hardly driven in the last 10 years. I'm very happy and I look forward to all the projects I already have in mind for this car.

A few details about the car:
Engine stock 3.2L, K&N air filter but I'm going back to OEM
100,000 miles, engine never opened
Targa in good shape, lots of wind noise and some water leaks though
Bucket seats, heated (not working)
Air cond (not working)
Cruise control (not working, but will try to revive... Canada has long boring roads)

Anyway, thanks again to everyone who answered my questions when I was shopping. I'll be around!

I suppose some kill-joy is going to come along and comment on your tire decision. Ignore the negative feedback and keep smiling. Looks like a great car!

Congrats!

I know, I know... I'm not crazy about them either, but they were the only set available quickly in Halifax where I had them fitted. On the bright side, they're Z-rated and great in the rain!

Thanks for the kind words, everyone! I smile every time I drive it!

The best tires are the ones that are rolling on the miles!

Nice car! But of course I am partial to red Targas. That tire looked like it really ripped apart on you. Good job on the new tires and getting back on the road.

Now was the smile before or after the tire blowout??

I never fashioned myself as a Targa type, but your car has changed that!!!!

VERY NICE 911, congratulations on your good judgement and great taste!

Yeah it was an old set and I drove all day in the sun which made them really hot. Then, as soon as I hit the rain you see in the picture, the tire shredded. I think the thermal shock was too much for the old rubber. The picture of the car with me is after the new tires were put on, so I was back to smiling!

Welcome to the Madness :=) same rear tire happened to me on my maiden voyage home from LA to Albuquerque...about 1200 miles. Catastrophic sidewall failure on 400 mile old tires on a late Saturday night on a lonely highway. Thanks AAA !! Enjoy her !!

Congratulations! Way to jump right in with a real adventurous ride. I drove my 1K home when I bought it, and it too was a great time.

Nothing beats that open air speed of the Targa!
