I know this topic has been beat to death but I am looking for a front Targa Top Seal for an '83 911. I purchased one for $98 from Vertex, only to find out that I had to custom cut to fit my '83 Targa. I inquired about purchasing one from Dan at CarsInc. He replied that he is now cutting them for customers for $250. Am I crazy or is this price out of line.
Is it possible to purchase a used seal or do they tend to be destroyed upon removal? Just thought I would pass on the information Thanks |

I agree $250 is WAY too high, If one of us knew exactly how they needed to be cut and had a template to share it would be better. But $150 just for trimming?

I actually think that sounds pretty good . If you DIY and wreck the seal you are out the dollars and have to do it again. I think it might be somewhat difficult to shave the rubber .

I bought a new seal and ground it down as described in Dan P's article only to find that I took way too much off. I junked it and bought the one from Vertex. It seemed to fit much better. My top sits about 3/16" high in the front center. I am hoping some other adjustments to the top itself will let it sit a little lower.

I have to agree that getting a ready-to-install seal from Dan is probably worth the money. I have heard so many horror stories and I am sure that Dan covers his work. Also he will be able to walk you through the process by way of his extensive knowledge in this area.
Jdub Quick edit: It is in the 80's today and I just cannot imagine keeping that Targa top on, so it sits at home for now. I love the coupe look, and hope to have one of each someday, but boy you just cannot beat a slightly cool morning, 5AM, heading into work at a brisk clip. Also, going over Aurora Bridge heading North in Seattle yesterday, I was passed by a newer Firebird that was clearly baiting me in the left lane (I was in center lane). The bridge slopes down, then kicks up as it meets solid ground; this is where I let up on the gas and let the car slow-by-gravity for the police that frequent the area. Yup, you bet: I match traffic speed, Fbird slips in front of me with nary a signal for effect, and then I see the cop in my rearview. I pull over and he shoots past me to nail the Fbird, which has now taken full brake and moved to the "Hey I'm in the right lane doing NOTHING officer" position. He was nailed clean, poor guy@ [This message has been edited by Jdub (edited 08-09-2001).] |

I got mine from Pelican, worked perfectly. I think that Porsche used the same seal for quite some time.

I wanted to post reply, in all fairness, from CarsInc so everyone could make up their own mind regarding the price.
Here is the response: "The Porsche seal sells for $180 from Dealer. I only buy dealer seals because of quality. It then takes me 1 Hour to cut them down. The $100 seal is an aftermarket and of less quality. New correct seals will not be made by Porsche or suppliers because of cost. If I were to get new one's of correct size remade they would sell for nearly $300." Thanks, |
