re: '87 Carrera
My high beams don't turn on, though they do when I hold the stalk in. Bulbs and fuses are fine. Also my right front turn signal doesn't work -- again bulb and fuses are fine. Furthermore, my left headlight (low beam) is brighter than my right one. Now I've noticed my left front parking light is out, though I haven't been able to check bulb and fuse yet. I plan to buy a turn signal/hi/low switch and stalk today and install it tomorrow. But I'm wondering if I have a ground problem now. I guess my lamps may not be aimed correctly, though they look pretty straight to me. The new switch can't fix all these problems. I don't have my Bentley's with me at the office. Do all these things run off the same ground? Suggestions? Thanks. |

The new stalk will fix the high beam on/ off problem. I had the same problem with my SC. as far as the brightness, are the two bulbs the same wattage on the lows? Maybe someone switched witha different bulb and you never noticed previously? As far as the parking light- hopefully just a bulb.
Good luck getting the stalk in. It is kind of a pain. Took me a while, and I had a sore neck afterward. Magilla |

The easiest thing to do is sit in your driver's seat- but facing the rear of the car. Then just tilt back and snake yourself under the dash, your back on the seat, your feet carefully resting behind the seat (I took shoes off) - I was able to do this job (relatively) comfortably this way. And I'm 6'3". A good flashlight is a must.
Do you have H4s or DOT lights? I had DOTs and noticed that after replacing one lamp, the newer one was brighter, even after checking aim. You'll have to check the Bentley for grounds...I just don't remember. Good luck, take your time with wiring the new switch, it's not so bad. -d ------------------ Dave '72 911T to '73 RSR Replica Project |

According to my recollection, there is a major multi-ground connection inside each fender, behind the headlamps. Take the headlamps off and you will see a fastener (screw, bolt, whatever) with perhaps three ground conductors. The fastener is holding the conductors onto the inside of the fender, behond those headlamps. I strongly suggest you remove those fasteners, shine them with a stiff wire bruch until they sparkle, put a coat of Dow Corning 11 or similar corrosion fighter on all those shiny parts, and reinstall the fastener. I predict improved lighting.

Which then leads us to the question of where to buy miniture wire brushes? I have numerous electrical connections that could use a good cleaning but can't find brushes to do it with. Anyone have a source?

I'll be buying a good wire brush. The best place I can think of is gun stores. They usually have cleaning kits whose parts are useful for a lot of other things as well.
