audio guys -- where do you mount crossovers?

Hi all -- planning to put components / separates in my front doors. Where do others that have installed components mount the external crossovers?

I'm considering the JL Audio TR650-CSi just because they only have an in-line capacitor as a LPF running to the tweeters which will be simple to hide, but the 6.75" size seems like it will require some challenges to mount.

Also, anyone have experience with Helix speakers? They seem like quality but I have never heard them.

Managed to mount mine in the stock location in the armrest/mappocket underneath the inner door handle. Had to dremel just a bit but worked out really well. You'll need to take off the armrest to get inside the door anyway. Alternate would have been inside the map pocket.
Mine were Polk. About 3 x 5".

Hm, factory location? My car only has the door speakers, were additional door speakers an option in 84 (or later carreras)?

Do you have a pic or know of one that shows this?

thanks!

There was something called the HiFi sound option, which gave you two mediocre speakers in each door, to replace the one lousy one that was standard.

This is where mine are as well. Installed by one of the POs. Nice vintage a/d/s 320is set up.

Thanks for the tips guys. Does anyone have a picture or a diagram of the factory crossover location? Searching didn't bare any fruit

If not, hopefully it will be obvious when i tear the door panel apart.

I'm a 'form follows function' kind of guy so I just bolted my Infinity crossovers to the door panel, right next to the speakers. They are more finished than other ones I've seen though. I ran the wires in the door, so just small wires come out of the door panel to the x-over.

Sorry I don't have a pic...

i would not suggest mounting them inside the door due to moisture. the door pockets are somewhat easy to do. you could mount them behind the footboard on the passenger side. they could also go in a center console, under the dash, in the glove box, under the seats, under the carpet in the rear footwell (unless you transport kids a lot because no one else will fit back there). there are lots of places, just avoid moisture.

Be careful if you mount them in the doors. I have mine mounted there, with velcro, to the door skin.
I had them mounted too high, rolled down my power window, it caught the crossover and pushed out a little pimple in my door.
Now they are lower.

I was originally going to mount mine under the passenger seat along with my amplifier. However, this would have required me to then route wires for both the tweeters and the woofers. And, the wiring that came with my speakers was too short to reach from under the seat to the door speakers. The wiring that came with the speakers is just for crossover-to-speakers and is nicely contained in a special wrap so I really wanted to use it.

I ended up mounting the crossovers inside of the door pockets in the area where the dooor handle is located. This has been a good place and is fairly out of the way. I used heavy 12 gauge wire from the amp to the sub (in the smugglers box) and 16 gauge from the amp to the crossovers in the doors.

My original Plan:

I copied this guy's setup. The crossover is completed covered by the door pocket:

Funny you should mention it... I was just working on it tonight.

This is the test fit for an amp panel in the trunk. I'm installing RS door panels so no pockets to hide the crossovers in.

Mine are under the dash somewhere. I pulled 16 gauge, 4 conductor in-wall speaker wire into the doors using the original wires.
