Resurrection: 2.7 on an Engine Stand
All,
A buddy of mine and I purchased a wrecked 76' 911 with 30K on the ODO that had been sitting for 20yrs or so. I needed the transmission for my car which is another story altogether. Anyway, we have a decent Stock 2.7 with CIS. If we can get it running, we might pursue a 914-6 autocross/drivers ed/grassroots/chumps/lemons type of car. In any event, we decided to make sure the engine will run before putting any more money into the project. so far, we have modified an engine stand to hold the engine in place with oil tank, small gas tank, and CDI. We even cut out the dash and bolted that on there for our control panel with the tach, temp and druck press. so far, we whittled thru all the wiring to get all the basics working. We were able to get the engine to turn over and even run for a little bit although it seemed to be running extremely rich, coughing and running rough. So here are the questions/issues that plague me: 1. Should the injectors be spraying gas with the pump on, engine off? (im thinking no). They even kept spraying after turning off the pump for a while. 2. can I hot wire the WUR and does that supply juice to the AAR as well? If so, what size fuse? 3. how important is crank case ventilation? can I open the oil tank neck to atmosphere or does it have to connected to the air box? 4. Can I bypass the fuel accumulator for this setup? I would like to eventually chunk all unecessary wires from the 14pin plug and leave all the wires in the engine harness intact. If I can get it running with a little confidence, ill start looking around for a 914 tub to have some fun with. We just fiddle with this on Tuesday nights. Next week, Ill have my CIS pressure tester with me to verify system pressures. I was able to get my SC humming a sweet tune, so hopefully I can get this 2.7 sorted. Thanks for any suggestions on this.

the injectors should not spray. sounds like the plunger is stuck in the FD. very common for engines that sit.
you can hot wire the WUR and AAR, but i would put a switch on there to turn it on after the engine has started. you dont want the WUR getting hot before you get it started. you also need power to the CSV. you could put a push button switch on it to fire it manually, but just be careful not to flood it. if it was me, i would give it a quick shot then "play" with the sensor plate while cranking to compensate for fuel mixture issues. you can open the oil tank and breather. the oil tank is fed back to the "turtle" on top of the CIS. that would need to be plugged, or just run a hose from that to the port at the back of the motor. (this is just a test to see if it runs). you could bypass the FA. if you can make it work, i would, but it should run without it, never tried it. its purpose when the engine is running is to smooth out pulsations from the FP. i would be VERY careful using and engine stand. if that fires and runs on only 4 or 5 cylinders, it could fall over very easily, and it will likely run on only 4 or 5 cyl's. i would check the torque on the heads and do a leak down test. if that is good, its either ignition or fuel that will keep it from running, most likely the CIS, which i would get rid of anyway and put carbs on it for a track car.

thanks for the info. The engine stand has 4 legs and is pretty sturdy. Ill search for a procedure to clean up and hopefully "unstick" the plunger.
