915 question
When I was changing out the tranny fluid, I removed the bottom cover in search of the cause of my poorly shifting 915. I found two things - first, part number 6 shown in the link below was very loose on the cover plate and part number 6 had a groove worn into one of the vertical forks on it. Of course not having another one on hand at the time, I filed down the vertical fork so that the rest of it was level with the groove. Both of these changes - tightening this part and filing down the groove - made a lot of improvement in shifting, but I think there is still of lot of improvement to be made.
I plan on replacing this part next time I change tranny fluid. Has anyone else seen this kind of damage on their tranny? What is this part called? Also does anyone know if the tranny plugs Pelican sells are the style I have now with the hex recess or if they have a hex head on them? http://www.pelicanparts.com/911/911_Parts/1978-83/3-4.JPG

Simply 'fork' in the parts catalog ... most people call it the guide fork.
No grooves on either of my transaxles ... just shiny spots worn on the dark presumably hardened nitrided surface.

I just called my local Porsche dealer a few hours ago about this part. The little fork on my '80SC is grooved also. Part #91530312900. Are you sitting down? List is $100. Hendrick Porsche in North Carolina said they'd let me have it for $75. I passed. It's recommened to use some locktite on those bolts that hold the fork down.

Only $75, could be alot worse. I think this could be the cause of at least part of the difficult shifting, so next time I open up the tranny, I'll replace it.

Get a good used one and replace it.

radcon ... the next time you are in the transaxle ...
You could try grinding a 'flat' on each inner surface of the fork ... then build up a bead of nickel-silver brazing rod ... like is used to face the leading/cutting edge of plows on farm and highway construction implements. File/grind down to the original width of the fork 'channel' ... tell the welding supply shop that you want some 'hard-facing' brazing rod, and they will know what to sell you! Special flux will be needed, too, but I doubt that the bill will exceed $20. You may want to inspect the #2 'dongle' for wear damage as well ... it too could be hard-faced with brazing rod to compensate for the wear/damage!
