On Ebay:
The serial number seems to match a 911E from 1972 according to my book. However, I was under the understanding that 7R cases only started in 1973 1/2 with the CIS injection. I thought (and many other people have thought) that the 4R cases were used up to 1973. The 1973 1/2 cases are supposedly the most sought after for racers because they are the strongest mag case with the smaller bore spigots. Anyone have any info they can shed on this? -Wayne

Wayne, that is undoubtedly a replacement case ... look closely at the serial number pic ... the numbers are spaced further apart than factory work, and there aren't any stars at the ends of the serial number string the way factory cases come in the cars!

Good call - that would indeed explain the mystery - I hadn't thought of the replacement case idea because I haven't seen any replacement cases with the number restamped.
I did notice the CIS accel linkage bosses, but I can't recall if those were on the MFI cars as well? I have also seen many cases with the stars, and quite a few without though... -Wayne

I'm not sure what those numbers mean, but they have to be some type of factory marking. the numbers appear to be raised into the casting. This is nothing anyone could possibly do at home.

7R Cases
Wayne,
It also appears to have actual bearings at both ends of the Intermediate shaft. I think this is a good indicator of a later case, although it could have been done anytime in the last 30 years, I suppose. My spare 7R long block, with about 25K mi on it burned up in a shop fire across town last year....sob Good Luck
