Question G50 transmission question

Can any one tell me if the cover plate on the front of a G50 transmission be removed with the engine and transmission installed or do they have to be removed. I have a metallic looking transmission fluid dripping from around one of the lower nuts on the transmission. BTW I replaced transmission fluid not too long ago and it looked clean so I checked inside of transmission and still looks clean.

More info needed. Which model G-50? Which cover plate? A photo would help.

Deadeye I took this picture of transmission cover and where oil is dripping from nut. I originally thought oil was leaking from front of transmission to front cover gasket but now it looks like it is leaking from nut holding cover to transmission. Model is G5001. I tried tightening nut but that did not help. I don't know why oil in transmission is clean but oil at nut is dirty. I got as much oil and dirt from this area as I could. Thanks Don

Did you install a new crush washer on the fill port when the fluid was changed?

Could that just be anti-seize compound. If there was alot put on it would run some after it got hot.

I have seen someone put anti-seize compound around the bell housing to engine surfaces with dripping that looks alot like that.

Sorry, but I cannot make out from your photo where the oil is dripping from. I have a G-50-01 and there is no "front cover" on this box. If the leak is at the seam where the nose (front) cover attaches to the gearbox, that is a gasket that can only be replaced by removal from the chassis as far as I know. It could be a drip coming from the gear selector shaft at the front of the gearbox as well. If it is not substantial, put an oil diaper on the floor under where you park it and wait for an engine drop.

I checked to see if oil was coming from fill port and it is not. I have checked all around this nut and that is where is seems to be coming from. It does look like it could be anti-seize but I have not used any on the front of transmission nor have I seen any in that area before. At one time there was a large puddle of transmission fluid under the car but only one time and only a drop here and there before the puddle and it was clean fluid.

Is it coming from the overflow tube and dripping down from there? Might have just been a slight overfill at last fluid change.

There's no overflow tube. It's a hex fitting (like a tall hex nut) that sits on top of the transmission (along the "spine" or centerline of the trans. It has holes in the hex that are a vent path into the transmission case. The hex fitting is hollowed out to allow the gear oil to puke out when it heats up, should there be too much fluid in it.
