oil sludge....

Just wondering how everyone deals with oil sludge as ive never had to deal with it in any of my previous cars. I just did an oil change and both of the drain plugs seemed to have a decent amount on them (again maybe im being paranoid since ive never dealt with it before).

I dont know how long it had been since the last oil change for sure the previous owner told me he had just done it before i bought the car at 127k and im just shy of 130k now.

Unlike my Saab, these cars really are not known for sludge, at least you don't read about it much. There are ways to flush an oil system, but what I used on my saabs was auto-rx. This was after I changed the oil every 1000 miles for 6 months.

I would guess that the previous owners were not good about observing proper oil change intervals. You might have to shorten the interval for the next few changes. Maybe every 2K for the next 2 - 3 oil changes.

This happens to be about the only thing that wasn't documented in the maintenance log that was given to me. Does anyone think going from a lighter oil or a heavier oil might help? The previous owner gave me a couple quarts of the oil he said he used (amsoil 20w50), i diddnt use any of them since i have pretty much always used rotella 15w40 and used that. Judging from the garage floor the car seems to like the rotella a bit more since there are no fresh oil spots (is this common when switching weights?)

911s are not sludge prone..and yes SAABs were sludge makers. Lots of engines failed due to crap in the oil pick up screens on many models.

If you are concerned, remove a valve cover and take a look inside. I'm sure it will be fine. Never saw a sludge problem in an air cooled engine.

A good HDEO will have aplenty of detergents (and ZDDP) to keep the engine clean. Rotella, Mobil 1 TDT, Delvac or Kendall Super D. Available at most FLAPS.

Liqui-moly makes a good engine flush product--not too powerful as to eat away at your seals, but effective.

Change oil at regular interval and do not drive it like a grandma. No sludge.

Cut open the oil filter and see what is in the element. Take pictures and post them to get opinions. If you still have the old oil run some of it through a coffee or paint filter. You could also send out an oil sample and get it analyzed.

I think ill do another oil change in at about 1800 miles (ive done 200 miles since the oil change) and send a sample to blackstone. I also noticed that since the oil change the car seems to pick up bit more freely and feel less laggy.
