Mistery filter in fuel tank ??

On my CIS car, the discharge plug underneath the fuel tank comes with a cilindrical mesh filter.

However, both the supply and return lines don't seem to go through the filter, so what's it there for ?

Yes, I assumed that. But the filter seems to be unconnected to the in / out fittings.

It seals at the top edge against the tank internally at the swirl pot cavity..the bottom speaks for itself.

You are doing the right thing replacing the in-tank filter. How bad was it?

Actually, I'm not replacing it. It was just cleaned along with the tank.
But the tank was really bad, there was lots of a kind of coarse dust.

Only about $45 from our host..get the "O" ring too.

This is a picture of the swirl pot..you can see where the filter seals at the upper side against the pot..and the fuel is drawn up below

Now it's clearer !

My big problem was not in the supply line but rather in the return line. It was getting clogged and causing stuttering around 2K rpm.
Took me 3 years to get to this. Guess I'm a slow learner...

I also found the return line input barb to the tank plugged up with old gasoline crud after car was sitting for 16 years in the garage. After prodding, probing, and thorough cleaning that barb to the tank, so that compressed air flowed freely into the tank, the car ran fine and has been for 2 years now with no problems.
