Just curious...6 speed in a 3.2??

I am just curious, not planning on doing this, but I wonder, can a 993 6 speed tranny be made to fit a 915 equipped Carrera? I realise that most of the mods to fit a G-50 in the car apply, such as pedals, clutch master lines and slave, shifter assembly, but what about the tranny itself? Has it been done before?

From the Inf that I have is been done, Protomotive has done many of them,My new Tunner has also done many as he explain it to me it requiares a lot of cutting to be able to fit the box but it can be done .

This is what I've gathered...

You can fit a G50 5 speed into a regular pre-G50 car if that G50 has been modified to fit in a short bellhousing. However, A regular G50 requires you to cut the torsion tube and use coil-overs. Unfortunately, I haven't heard of any short bellhousing conversions for six speeds. They might fit a Carrera that was equipped with a G50 five speed because the factory already changed the set up in the rear to fit the tranny, however in your 915 equipped Carrera, much cutting would be needed (as well as putting some sort of strengthening to make up for the lost torsion tube).

The 6 speeds are variants of the G50. Any place a G50 fits a 6 will also fit. It will be a bolt on for the 87-89 911. You will need to fit an earlier speedo sender to the trans case and modify the shift linkage to fit the earlier chassis.

Bill,
Are you sure? The G50 looks alot different (longer with a totally revised rear mount) between the '87-'89 and the 964/993 later units.

John, I base my answer on 2 6spd installations that I know of, 1 is Mike Bavaro and another is a Pelican head, ?dad911?. The 6 speed is longer, and does use a different trans mount. The biggest issue with a G50 or 6 spd transplant is the interference with the early style torsion bar tube, using the later style or even better converting to coil overs clears up this issue. The second concern is changing the older mechanical clutch to hyd operation(an 87 up car will not have this problem). The third issue is the shift linkage and the fourth is the speedometer. I believe that a late 964 case cover and speed sender will fit the 6spd trans. In addition I know of several G50 equipped 964s that have had their G50 relaced with 993 6 spds. It can be done, the parts are out there, some ingenuity and sweat are required. I think that I properly should not have used the term "bolt on"

Fun thread, just a thought....
How about the racing transmissions from Quaife? They have a six speed in both sequential and H pattern. It is designed for the GT2, but it could make a sexy package on a street car!?
Any thoughts? Check it out at www.quaifeamerica.com.

I don't have a lot of experience with Porsche 6-spd transmissions, but I'd be more wary that the gear ratios would be too high for the 3.2 to cope with.

I have driven a 993 C2S and it seemed to need to be revved like crazy to get the performance out of it. I doubt a 3.2 with a 993 6-speed's lofty gear ratios would work as well as a 3.2 does with a G50.

Thanks for all the info guys, Adam, I am running near 400hp right now, and by next year, I'll be close to 500hp and at the limit of my 915. I always planned a G-50 swap, but if its not that much harder or more expensive for a 6-speed, then why not? I always see rear coilovers on Rennlist for $500 or so anyway.
