Where is the interior temperature sensor ? ('87)

Hello, I am looking for my interior temperature sensor on the 911 '87 (Targa) with air conditioning. It is not right next to the steering wheel (pic).

Thanks
Roland

If you have the automatic heat control (the dial in the center of the console that goes from 1-9 with NO red levers), it would be where you think. When it is present, it has two slits in that hole for enter to enter the sensor that is mounted inside the dash. It looks like you must not have automatic heat, or at least not from the factory.

I was just in the garage again.
I think this is an automatic heat control with two red levers, right?
The dial is from 1 to 3!
It's an U.S. delivered car - seems that nobody in Germany has ever seen this.

No, actually... that is a manual heat control system. The red knobbed levers operate the flappers in the heat exchangers at the exhaust pipes, as well as closing contacts which switch on the rear blower in the engine compartment. The rotary switch operates and provides speed control for the auxillary blowers located in the footwells. The manual system utilizes no cabin heat sensor, which if it did, it would be there as pointed out above by Alan.

I understand!
I thought all 911 Carrera since '86 would have the automatic heat control. That's probably wrong. THANKS!

Yeah, the 911 heating system is notoriously confusing. If you're interested, check out the amazing site that a Pelican user put together: 911 Auto Heat

Holy smokes - the diagram on that page is AWESOME! Thanks Pelican. I've only had my 911 for the summer, and have had very little opportunity to use the heat - but over the last week, I've been trying to figure out the heater controls on some cool mornings. I figured out how to make it hot, but not cooking my feet was the trick (what this car lacks in AC, the heat makes up for spades - I could roast a damn turkey with a 911's heat).

...not that I have autoheat, but this cleared up the mystery of the dash controls.

Last question:
Was the automatic or manual heat control on demand ?
Or does it depend on the year?

It depends on the model and the year. Auto heat was standard on turbos, optional on 911's and not available for some (cabriolet) models. The version that you have in your car started in a particular year (which I don't recall) and was often found on the open cars.
