Ricers...

I am new to the p-world but ive been reading just about all that i can on this forum and rennlist to learn more about these cars. I have enjoyed the uninhibited bashing of ricers. I went to a honda bbs website www.superhonda.com and i searched for porshce related threads and all that i found was that they all admired the car. They held it in higher esteem than their own cars. I also found this that made me laugh...

My best highway race.... and the first time I saw above 125-
I was on the way to my classes at HACC- and as I merge on to 83, (3 lanes at this point) I see a porsche 911 in the passing lane doing at least 120...

I had just had my car turboed... I was pumped... despite the bad traffic... I caught him quick. I'm right on his ass merging onto 81 now... bad traffic... no dice for like 2 miles... finally, we hit open road... he cuts to the right, I stay in the lane and pull up beside him.

At the start of the race I was already doing 100 mph... smash the pedal thought the stinking floor... I start pulling ... and pulling and pulling... it seems like forever... but it was soo quick. I'm a full car lenght in front of him... I hear "POP, POP, POPP, POP!" I look down at the speedo... it was siting on top of the odemeter... at 140 MPH. (4th gen guys know how the dash is setup...) I look at the RPMs... well into redline... I back off... still hearing poping nosies... I look in the rearview to see the porsche.... all I see is light blueish white smoke... argg.... It stoped smoking as I backed off...

I got to HACC... pop the hood... the valve cover was covered in oil... It was everywhere... It was leaking out off the valve cover breather filter....

And so the saga of the blown motor began...
But she's back... and faster than ever

First of all, welcome to the board.

They held it in higher esteem than their own cars.

Well they should.

One of the differences between Porsche owners and ricers is that a Porsche owner would feel funny going to a formal event in a clown costume.

Juan (and others), I've got a question for ya.

Not many rice cars in my neck of the woods. The ones I do see look the part - big aluminum wings, clear lenses, bumble bee sound - but aren't particularly fast.
Do the "fast" or modified cars look this way as well? I figured guys with enough money to make the car fast might not do the aluminum wing thing. During the muscle car era you watched out for the more subdued looking cars. The ones all jacked up with racing decals plastered everywhere usually just made a lot of noise.

Rarly, I can answer that. I've seen a few supras put together by guys that have around 500 HP.
They weren't riced out. They had front spoilers, the usual rear spoiler, and looked like real race machines. Nice Rims. No stickers. Gorgeous interior (white with lavender trim etc), and they looked very cool.
Not one sticker except for maybe one on the rear specifying the builder or the owner, and that was only 1 car.

RarlyL8 & Juan & KurtB,

You guys may be right. There is some really fast import (rice) cars on the road. I have a friend who is into the Honda scene. I rag on him quite a bit. But, he spends the bulk of his money on getting his 1/4 mile times down. He has a plain jane looking hatchback civic. I suppose the serious folks spend the money where it counts, in the engine. And then there are the Type-R stickers, fake wastegate noise makers and the huge wings that will tip the assend of a car over like a rack of Brontosaurus Ribs...

I have an 11 sec 300zx and its 100% stock in appearance(black). This car accelerates faster than my 911 stops. At least it feels that way. With slicks and a g-tech meter my 0-60 times are in the 2.8-3.0 range with a 200 lbs passenger in the car.

I found out the hard way that not all rice is created equal.

Cheers, VC

My god, I'm sober and can't work out how to post a link. Anyhow, the point was look out all, for anything with the letters "WRX" on it.

Rarly,

The answer is both. The show cars and tuner cars (to show off product) could have the stickers to go with the power. They don't get driven much, so you probably don't see them anyway.

You average dude who wants to go fast? Quite possibly no stickers, no big wings and no flashy paint job. Those cost money that could go into horsepower...

It really isn't that different to Porsche ownership in some ways - there are people who want "the look" and there are people who want to go fast. Some want both.

Next to Japan, I would think Hong Kong could be a rice capital. There's Type-R on anything and everything from Civics to trucks with moulded air dams. I see neon lights and big wings but often they run nitro or big boost too. I can never pick who's who until the challenge is on.

I gotta say, I am impressed by some of these rice cars. They have all the looks of rice but they sometimes have the onboard computers too. Was it Fast and Furious where the guy is in his car playing Playstation before the race - yep I've seen that at Tai Mei Tuk on Saturday nights before the guy lets loose with his two NOS bottles.

Cheers
Mark
