3.2 L Value and Info

I am buying a spare motor to put in my '74 Carrera. In the event I never get around to actually completing these grandiose plans I'm curious on the value of the motor if I need to sell it.

It's a '78 SC taken to 3.2L, rebuilt by a reputable shop with new Mahle pistons and cylinders, int and ex valves, guides, original heads ported and polished, new main, con rod and counter shaft bearings, new timing chains, 911 S Web Cams, new plug wires and 46 IDA Weber carbs w/ K & N air cleaners. It also includes flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, motor mounts, headers, coil and oil cooler lines.

Motor was used about 1000 (adult?) miles in a time trial car by a friend I trust. Been sitting about 15 years now.

Any advice about potential problems would also be appreciated, i.e. stock Carrera transmission suitability or other installation problems.

Thanks in advance.

p.s Any advice or direction on using motor to build a "Dakar" style Porsche dune buggy? Or maybe a Porsche powered sand car?

Sounds like it could be 1000 hard miles, although the Porsche engines are very good at absorbing abuse. What you have here is a short-stroke 3.2. Bored-out may not be the proper term, as you can bolt on some 3.2 big bore kits without modifying the case.

Sounds like a nice motor. If all the paperwork is in order, this motor would fetch around $8-$10K.

Hmm, come to think of it, I didn't think that Mahle made any big bore kits. What type of crank is in there?

Thanks Wayne, I've edited my post accordingly. That damn 9th grade auto shop vocabulary still haunting me.

Does Mahle 98mm pistons and cylinders sound right? I'll have to check on the crank, assume it original as I don't seem to see anything in the paperwork.

I don't think the use was overly zealous as I ran with my friend a few times and recall him being considerable less heroic than myself. Hope he doesn't read this post!

Any advice on work required after sitting this long? Some new valve springs?

Do you think my stock '74 transmission with 86,000 miles is up to the task?

Sanks again. (German for thank you)

Any other opinions? What would someone be prepared to offer now?

Thanks

Then will start to run much better as the rust, and crap is burned out, and the parts mesh back together again. Leakdown test on this motor will look like crap if you do it right now, but after you run it, it should be okay...

Like Wayne says, how has it been sitting and how (and where) has it been stored? That would be my biggest concern.

It should be good, by my wild-assed guess, for about 260hp if it was running correctly (you don't say what the compression ratio is, but I assume 9.5:1 or less for single plug). As part of my upgrades (quite similar to what you describe) I was told that the magnesium cased, 7:31 ring and pinion (if it is a '74) won't last too long if you drive in anger (on the track). Then again, you might be alright.

Mahle do make 98mm P&Cs to fit an SC wrist pin. ANDIAL has them in CIS and carb/MFI specification (difference is dome shape and valve recess, I think - the carb/MFI ones will take up to RSR cams). About $3k a set - ouch - ask me how I know.

In good condition, I personally think it is worth $10k. It would certainly cost more to build...

Thanks Cameron;

It's been sitting on a pallet in a dry warehouse.

Your right on the compression ratio, it was calculated at 9.24:1 by Andial. The heads are ported and polished to 42mm in./39mm ex.

No concern about some valve springs being compressed that long?

Sorry - I can't help any further. I'm just good at paying for my engine builder to put my engine together. What I know I know only from lotsa discussions with him and other research. No practical or engineering knowledge here.

I would check very carefully for corrosion and the condition of all rubber lines. My '75 has sat for "only" 6 months (and 6 months before that) and I was nervous starting it up over the weekend.

Do you already own the engine????
