Can chrome be polished?

I have a set of chrome wheels. One is a little foggy from micro scratches. Can the scratches be polished out? I got some chrome polish but it doesn't seem to be polishing the wheel. It seems like it's just a cleaner. I know chrome is a hard material so is the only alternative to re-chrome? Thanks Bobby

The mere fact that chrome can be scratched suggests that it can be polished. I would dismount the tire (if mounted) and take the wheel to a polisher who has the right buffing equipment. I looked a buffer the other day at an abrasives distributor that looked like a nice bench grinder except on a stand. Over $2000!! It was like 5 hp. Only the real serious have machines like that.

most scratches will not polish out of chrome and it depends how deep they are. if they were polished aluminum i would agree with the above post but you are dealing with a thin layer of chrome that you can not sand on. if you decide to re-chrome them i can get you a good deal from a place in california.

Thanks for the replies. Wheel Enhancement is not far from me. I'll take it to them and see if it's salvagable. Bobby

There's also a place that chromes and repairs a lot of wheels in North Hollywood, on Lankershim. It is well known, though I forget the name, and they do a lot of Fuchs rims, including custom painting, chroming, or polishing. They did an outstanding job on a set for me years ago including the center cap, lug nuts, and oem wheel locks, and I think they guarantee the chrome for life. But before you try that, perhaps try a Mothers wheel polishing paste first.
