Who want's to do my tranny? It's only money right.

I have decided to rebuild the box since it is out and I was wondering if anyone on the board or maybe you can recommend someone who does this on the side or whatever. I would say my car will be down for 4-8 weeks (vacation etc..) so time is not a huge concern. I tried to contact Gary Fairbanks but he did not return my call. Any ballpark pricing on a rebuild? Any obvious mods or changes I should perform? Thanks guys.

You could try VERTEX in Miami. I know they do alot of transmissions by mail. Speak with Gilbert - tel: 305 422 2727 . You can tell him Eric with the black 1975 Carrera sent you. My car is there now and I'm going to pick it up this afternoon. Gilbert has alway's been real good to me on service.

Good Luck

What's wrong with your tranny that you want to rebuild it?

1st gear grinding, very slow 2nd gear change etc.. The standard stuff. I know it will never be "crisp" but it has to get better than this. My former mechanic(excellent, but moved) could not believe I drove the car the way it is, but I got real good at massaging her into gear without grinding.

Steve Weiner at Rennsport in Portland Oregon is pretty well respected in this area.

Geez, if you were in So.Cal. and bought the beer, I'd show you how for a minimal fee. In my opinion, they are easier to do than the 915 trans (four versus five speeds) with no fifth in the front cover. I did nime about 20k ago with new dog teeth for 2nd and new syncros all around. I was surprised at how simple it was.

BTW, mine is also a 77.

Tinker,
I have the tools for removing 915 dog teeth.
Do they make tools like that for the 930 transmission?
How did you remove the 930 dog teeth?
Did you Dremel them off or what?
sorry for all the questions,
Chris

Dremel!!! Nooooooooo! It is one of my favorite tools, but not necessary to remove the dog (Synchro) teeth. I borrowed a buddies Snap On universal bearing separator.

http://buy.snapon.com/catalog/PRO.asp?Group%5FID=1207&Group%5Fname=Bearing+Separators&Cat%5FID=1125575&Cat%5FNAME=Pullers&Sub%5FCat%5FID=1125752&Sub%5FCat%5FNAME=Bearing+Separators&store=snapon%2Dstore

Hope the address works! It basically grabs/clamps around the gear. You can put it in the vice or whatever and use the appropriate size drift and sledge to knock/press the teeth off the gear. It`s a simple press fit that holds the teeth on.

Tinker,
Ahha!, a bearing seperator. I have one of those. For 915's I use a couple of tools like this to remove the dog teeth:

They make putting the dog teeth on straight much easier as well.
