Huh, I guess the rear wings actually do work
I pulled the whale tail my PO added in a attempt to make my '74 look like a later car as I am putting her back to a stock external look. After getting the exhaust issue sorted I did my first "at speed" drive and she was noticably more sensitive to cross winds... Anyone else experience this? Any change in suspension settings for street use, or just accept this as part of a stock look?

Will you install a ducktail or no tail at all?
My first Porsche had no wing, but I can't remember if it had wind issues at speed. I was too busy hanging on!

a good compromise is the 964 retractable deck wing. i ran one for a few years when my car was still fit for street duty. i left it down unless at the track or on spirted twisty drives,,, cause i could. helped with motor cooling too quite a bit. i did a real time test when on a long freeway run with it up n down the gauge said so..

Do you have a front spoiler installed?

Yeah they do, I can't remember the exact numbers but at 100 mph or so there is many pounds of lift in the unadorned 911 shape. My car has no aero aids and since I rarely exceed 100 mph, I don't feel it necessary to add them. According to those in the know you can run a front spoiler without the tail but not the tail without the front spoiler. Cheers

I'm not going to go crazy or race her, but I guess I miss how planted she felt.

Anyone have a '74 with a ducktail on it by chance?

Rear wings do work
I have an 80 euro coupe backdated to 74 w/a duck tail. I think it looks really good and have not had any issues w/handling at over 100mph.

'74 with duck
Here's my '74 with a ducktail. I love the look. Still trying to decide if I should add the front spoiler lip or not. Hope this helps!

Some nice cars in this thread. And yes, they provide downforce. The stock whaletail also weighs a lot.

Im sure it did provide some down force as to how much I dont know. I always look at aero with a skeptical eye. It is not that I think it does not work I just am of the school of though that most people rarely get there road cars going fast enough for it to make a difference. At 100-150MPH im sure aero has a huge difference, but at 0-85MPH I wonder what it does. I would be willing to bet it was more the weight of the tail than the down force it provided. If you are only using the car for daily driving and weekend fun then I would not worry, if you are taking it to the track aero will make a difference.
On any note does any one here have aero numbers on the 911 (down force VS speed)? Regards Dave

Be careful the way you throw the words around, creating downforce is one thing, and it's what ONLY a wing does. Reducing lift is something completely different and its what a spoiler does, our cars have spoilers not wings.
