Chip issue: no start

I just got a used authority chip for my 1985 911 in the mail. I went ahead and installed it. Buttoned up everything and it cranks but doesn't start. Took it back apart, checked the chip (direction, connection, etc) and nothing.

Going back with the stock chip to see if it works.

Any advice?

Either the perf chip or connections to the box weren't seated properly, or you have a bad chip...

Tried the chip twice with the same results (no start) and then with the oem chip it started right up.

Must be the chip...

I suggest looking here if you want a performance chip:

911Chips.com - Porsche Performance Chip Tuning

I have one of their performance chips in my '84 Carrera and the car runs like a scalded cat!

There is a small circle on the end of the chip and the board, do they match up? You can't rely on the orientation of the printing on the two chips. You might have put it in backwards and possibly erased the Authority.

Some of the Autothority chips went hand-in-hand with a MAF to replace the Bosch barn door air flow meter; if you have one of these chips I'm fairly sure it won't start with the barn door in place.

The Bosch AFM measures air temp plus air volume, and the original DME software integrates these two values.

The Autothority uses a Ford MAF that only provides air mass and it send this signal to the DME on the original air volume wire. Then it takes the air temp wire and runs it thru a potentiometer(sp) to ground to have some adjustment for this value.

Thus the software in these Autothority chips calculates 'Air' slightly differently than the stock chips.

Wow! i did NOT know that! Thanks Chuck! The Autoauthority chips show up used now and then - could have been a bad deal for me.

Saving up for a Steve Wong.

What year is your DME and/or chip? If you put a '87-'89 chip in an '84-'86 DME, it probably won't start. '87 on is a 4k chip, prior to that is a 2k chip. AFAIK you can't start a 2k DME car with a 4k chip installed.
