AC burnt out?

So i charged my AC system. worked for awhile but would often get a bird chirping sound in my vents. Sounded like the fan squeaking. Then it seemed like one speed went out and then another to the point where i smelled a burnt smell in the cabin and the ac stopped working completely. Compressor still works, defrost still works etc...

Any ideas?

It sounds like your evaporator fan has died.

Sounds as if the evaporator blower was drawing to much current and the thermostatic protective switch in the air inlet duct (behind the passengers foot board) has failed.

Mouse, mice in the squirrel cage blower?

Before you replace your fan, check the resistor pack that is in the passenger footwell duct - these resistors are what control the fan speeds, and often burn up, esp if you have any rubbing of the fan which would cause extra current draw.

The evap fan is the one inside the smugglers box - if you have to replace it I suggest you get the keul fan upgrade; I just did this and it seems a worthwhile improvement.

You don't mention what year car you have BTW.

Agree with Chuck. If the resistor pack is not passing power to the fan, then nothing is going to happen.

As well I have the Griffiths fan upgrade and its well worth it.

Before you do anything you may want to try this. It worked for me.
Drill a small hole in the top of the fan housing in the Smugglers box. Spray some WD-40 in the hole using the straw. I did this and the fan inside the housing started turning again. I have to do this about twice a year and then cover the small hole with electircal tape.

NP - the Griffiths fan update requires you to find the evap box from a an earlier year, like up to 86 I believe. I got my housing from parts heaven. You only need to change the top of the housing, so you don't have to disturb the evaporator.

The top/bottom housing clips well they are a different story - when I had my box apart I ditched those clips and put straps + springs around the housing to hold it together - works MUCH better and can be easily installed and removed with the evap + lower housing in place.

tpweiss9953: I just replaced my entire A/C system. If you need help I'm in Slidell, Eden Isle, and would be glad to help you out. I have the Resistor that I took out of my 88. We could plug it in and test to see if that is your problem

No time like the present to throw the whole system in the trash; it really is a joke
