Diagnose Play in Steering Column
 

Had my 930 out of commission for a couple of months and got it up and out today. Noticed today that I have about a 1/4" of up and down play in the steering column. Had not noticed that previously and had not done any work on the steering. Before I get in and locate the problem does anyone have and idea what is going on? Thanks.

At the steering wheel itself, or lower down? I know when I got my 911, not even a month after, I had the same thing. Turns out the little plastic piece responsible for guiding it where it sits on the bearings in the column broke into a bajillion pieces.

Thankfully, there's these neat little sleeves that you insert that take their place and aren't plastic. Problem solved.

I'd take the steering wheel off though, since you can look inside and look past it to see if the plastic piece is busted up. If it is, and you can see it jiggling up and down, that's your issue.

From what I've read, go for the Mitch Leland repair sleeve.

+1. The Mitch Leland bushing is a 10 minute fix that will have you set up as good as new. Can't recommend it enough!

Mitch's bushing is a great and simple fix and upgrade. If the entire steering column is also loose there are 2 bolts just inside the dash that hold the upper column in place. Mine were loose enough that I could back them out by hand. They are sheer bolts (round with no way to torque them) and I replaced them with Allen head bolts, some Loctite and snugged them down. The combo of a new bushing and tight new bolts fixed my column 3 years ago and I haven't had any further issues
