Porsche Crest 1989 930 Vin and engine number help

Hi all,
Firstly I would like to thank the forum participants on their contribuition to a fantastic source of information for newbies like me.

I recently purchased an 89 930 Vin WPO ZZZ 93ZKS 050248 with engine 61L 53650. I spent hours reading the forum threads and looking a various links. I cant find any reference to a 61L engine. The vehicle is located in Australia and the import approval was issued in 1998.
Any help I could get on where the vehicle may have originated. If it is an original right hand drive and if the engine is the original factory fit. The crankcase has the following forged into it near the sum plug but on the opposite side 930. 101. 104. 6R

Many Thanks Glenroyd

Welcome to the club.

The serial number chassis in the VIN (last 5 digits) is for a Turbo N.A., which was a designation for US/Canada model, 639 produced.

Welcome to the club.

The VIN you listed is probably from the trunk. You should have a VIN sticker on the driver door jam with JBO instead of ZZZ.

The Red Book list the matching engine number as 68Kxxxx.

Like you, I could not find any reference to a 61lxxxxx engine even through Google...

Show more pics of your car.

Cheerio

Interesting.

****All of the following is from the Red Book and may or may not be accurate****

The "L" designation indicates it is a 1990 model year but it should start with 62L, not 61L. I can find no reference to a 61L engine. The 1989 model would be a "K" designation. I wonder if it's due to the fact that the 1989 model ended the early half year of 1989 and the 1990 model picked up the later half year. Perhaps they start tooling up the new engine designation before the 1989 models were finished and decided to call it a 61L??? The first reference I see to an "L" designation would be the 1991 model but that would be a 61M.

Hi JJ
Thanks for your reply. No vin in either door jam. The only vin I can locate is the one stamped into the bulkhead under the carpet in the trunk. No sticker located near the trunk latch. I have an Australian import compliance located next to the paint code sticker. I may have to see if the dealer / factory can help me.

Please see attached vin breakdown from reference book. Its odd the last 6 digits on your car should be in the (000001-000857) range for a 1989 ROW coupe. The US 1989 coupes are (050001-050639). I confirmed my 89 has a 68k engine number also.

Can you see if any of the panels have vin stickers or on the A pillar by the windshield? How about the option stickers in the owners manual? Some people forget about those and those have the factory engine code on them.

Nice looking car!

Very nice looking car with a very strange VIN.

Being a RHD it should be a RoW but "05xxxx" is listed as N.A. coupe (US/Canada)...

Hopefully the dealer or registration office can shed some light on this.
