Question Faulty Gas Gauge

I posted this on another board but I'm not sure I got all the information I was looking for. I'll see if anyone here has some advice. The gas gauge on my 91 C2 reads below the "E" and the fuel warning light is blinking. The tank is full. The manuel says that blinking fuel light indicates a "fault" in the system. Would a stuck float on the level mechanism cause this? I wouldn't think so - it sounds like an electrical gremlin to me. I was going to drain the tank this week and pull the float out and have a look. (By the way, all of the other gauges seem to work fine.)
