77 oil temp sender & gauge ohms test?
Hi,
Does anyone know the range of ohms the temp sender should be (I know there are two types) and what the range of ohms the gauge should be (I know there are two types of gauge as well and that they need to be matched to each other. I just talked to a guy at an instrument repair shop who said a auto electrician would be able to vary the resistance input to the gauge to see at what resistance it reacts then measure the range the sender puts out. Thanks in advance Bill

If you wanted to do this yourself and have a battery charger and a Volt/Ohm meter and a Thermometer and a radio shack nearby too for a varable resistor/potentiometer.
You could test the sender by connecting an ohmmeter to the terminal and body when cold and then immersing it in boiling water with a thermometer and recording the resistance as it cools. To test the gauge you would need a 12 volt source and a potentiometer that covers the resistance range of the sender from room temperature to boiling. (That you just recorded) Hook up the 12v supply with the potentiometer in series with the gauge input and vary the resistance and see what the gauge reads.

Thanks for spelling out the procedure to test this. Many thanks Bill
