Hand throttle (72 911T)

Hi all,

My hand throttle doesn't seem to work... Anyone have any pics or diagrams of the assembly? Idéas where to start looking?

The car is 1972 911T

Thanks!

/Christian

It's a very simple system. there should be a "sleeve" over the throttle rod underneath the hand throttle leaver and the lever pushes on this rod. Make sure that the set screw on that sleeve is tight. and that the lever is intact. On occation a piece of that lever disintergrates and you should see broken peices in the center tunnel.

Do a search on hand throtle. It helps to remove the seat as well to get to it.

Derek? Do you know how much black printer ink I just used? Still, I think the diagram was worth it...thanks!

Sorry, about the ink, Paul! This is a better diagram, anyway! Somebody needs to make that link out of Ti instead of plastic!

sorry about that...

im so used to drafting on the computer, where i have the background set as black and the lines white (its easier on the eyes) that i forget to "reverse it" back sometimes...

Same piece for me as well, here's the link to the part on Pelican. http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/911E/POR_911E_pedals_pg2.htm#item9 (Hand Throttle Control Piece). It would be a lot easier with the seat out, but it can be done, takes a little contortion of the hands.

Doesn't have to be Ti, even pot metal would have been a world of improvement over this annoyingly under-engineered piece...

Mine was broken and I replaced it (what a pain) and then noticed after I put everything back together that now my emergency brake doesn't work. I'm taking the seats out in a few weeks when it gets a little warmer here in MI, then try to fix it while the seats are out. This assembly is like a very frustrating puzzle, you can't see/reach anything in the tunnel. Has anyone else been frustrated by this "simple" repair?

BTW, I use my hand throttle to start the car when it's cold, it really helps!

Mine was broken when I got the car, any morning when it was under 50 (all of them) I had to sit in my car for five minutes or so with my foot on the gas, now I just pull my little lever and listen close for the engine to start revving too high as I eat my breakfast. Webers don't like cold weather. I agree, the repair was a royal PITA, it's all feel, you can't see $hit. Maybe if you pulled a seat and took loose the ebrake cable, but that seemed like a lot of work to me.

guys;
the car is a '69. i've removed the 4 bolts (#47) that hold the E-brake base (#2). is the next step to disassemble the hand throttle lever (#18) from the base ?
thanks!

Timely post! I just bought a '72 and the guy told me it was a bear to start cold. When asked if the hand throttle worked, he responded "what hand throttle?" I'm hoping this is the problem with a simple solution, and I will verify in a few days.

When I replaced mine I did not need to remove the hand lever from the base.

By removing the four bolts that hold the base to the tunnel you should be able to pull up (just a bit) and tilt the assembly enough to remove the clip (#21) that holds the plastic piece (#19) in place. I would suggest removing the driver's seat to improve access and leverage and having a telescoping magnet on hand just in case.

Once the clip is off it is relatively easy to slip your new #19 over the cable, onto the pin, and re-install the washer and clip.

Make sure you get it over the wire with the round metal block that sits on the cable forward of #19 before you clamp the base back to the floor... you may need to adjust the position of the metal block (it has a small set screw) to work best. There is a small hole in the base of the assembly that gives access to this piece.

Here is the diagram showing the cylindrical piece on the throttle rod which the plastic 'link' has to engage, and push against ... #21 below:
