Got my SL Gate Shifter Installed

Whoo Hoo!

I got it installed last night.
Although I'm not real sure how to do the final adjustments and the fact that I did have a bit of trouble getting the pivot pin through the lever coupler, it all turned out very nice. (Maybe three hours working time.)

I did have to grind quite a bit off of my shifter housing to clear the longer pin, but it wasn't too bad.

Now I know when I'm in first or second.... I love it.

The rattle is still there... only in 3rd or 4th and only at high rpm under load... I just don't know why it would start doing that....

Checked out your car on your website--that is one great looking SC. Love that color--very unique.

What does this gate shifter do to improve performance? How does it work--does it spring load 1st and 2nd so the extra effort to engage these gears indicates you are in 1st or 2nd? Where does the shifter rest in neutral? Between 3rd and 4th maybe? My shifter is slow between 1st and 2nd but 3rd, 4th, and 5th can be shifted very fast. I'm trying to cure the 1st to 2nd shift slow speed. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Joe, I did install the muffler and I do like the sound... here's a sound clip... http://bender.annenberg.edu/pelican/leland2.mpg

And a picture...

Those are just generic Borla stainless tips that I had welded on.

As for the gate shifter...

yes, it is a combination of spring tension to let you know what geat you are in and a pair of gates which prevent you from accidentally going into 1st or 2nd.

Check out this thread...

Installing Sherwood Lee's Gate Shifter Kit

Your slow shifting 1st and 2nd gear symptoms could be due to a myrad of things including a poorly adjusted clutch, shift coupler out of whack, shift lever components and or bushings worn or not lubed, or simply worn scynchro rings, hubs etc.

Start with the cheapest fix and work your way up...

I'd also suggest buying Waynes book, 101 Projects for your 911... it has several good articles on this exact same thing.

And thank you for the compliments...

Warren, yes I did... I really like the CHT gauge... and the voltmeter is a handy sucker as well.

And the cool part is that I can still use my ash tray for loose change!
