HELP!!! Knocking noise in Trans

Help!!!

I just put my rebuilt motor back in the car got everything connected and started the engine. I now have a loud almost metalic knock type tap in the transmission. This can't be good!!!The sound seems to be coming from the front end of the trans where the shift shaft goes into the tunnel. It's there when the engine is running and the trans is in neutral with the clutch out. It increases with engine speed. With the clutch in it goes away. This is an '84 3.2 with a 915 trans. Trans was completely rebuilt last Feb and got all new gears, syncros , the works. Any ideas as what the hell this is?

i assume you haven't driven the car with the rebuild trans, due to the engine rebuild? the most common thing that would relate to noise in the nosecone is the 5th and reverse operating sleeve nicking on the reverse idler due to improper setup. obviously, the engine and trans have to come out and the nosecone removed to fix.

John,

Actually the car was drive back last spring prior to the engine being pulled and rebuilt. The trans got about 1000 miles on before the rebuild of the engine. The shifting was very good other than occasionally it would balk at going into third if the RPM's were too low. There wasn't any noise back then after the trans was rebuilt and prior to pulling the engine.

Having just helped drop an engine, seperate the tranny and then put it all back together I can say it is a delicate process and everything must be aligned/tightened correctly.

Couple of guesses would be the flywheel bolts, misaligned shaft or something not properly reattached to the car.

Did you do it yourself? If so it unfortunately sounds like it might have to come out again but I'll let the experts tell you for sure. If not, I'd take it back to the shop that did it and tell them to fix it cause they appear to have done something wrong.

Good luck.

Hey Doug,

Thanks for the response. No I didn't do it myself . The tranny was rebuilt at Dulles International Motorsport in Feb of 2001. It's only got a couple thousand miles on it too. Since you're local to me I'll bet you know where I'm talking about. Everything seems to be attached and installed correctly and the noise definitely appears to be coming from inside the tranny. Like I said it's a metal knock that seems to coincide with engine speed as it only appears when the clucth is engaged. I haven't driven it since it started as we found it the second time the car was started during the installation of the rebuilt engine. It certainly doesn't sound good at all. I'll be talking to Dave at the shop to see what he feels might be the problem.
