Clock Porsche 911 Targa 1979

hello everyone,
my clock only works when the engine is running. Did someone already have this problem?

Thanks.

Julien

Has the wiring been messed with? Sounds not original. You need to find an un-switched source for 12 volts. Poke around with a volt meter while the car is off, and you can probably find one. then hook it up. I know that sounds simple/but frustrating, but that's what I would look for.

Quartz clock?

This seems to be a fairly common problem. Mine was doing the same thing. Ran great when the car was running, but w/i 30 minutes of turning the car off the clock stopped. run a search for clock and capacitor.

There are two capacitors in the quartz clock that can go bad. I replaced mine this weekend with new ones. Less than $3 from Radio Shack. I've checked it the last two mornings and it's working great. I pulled enough info from several clock threads to basically follow directions and get it done.

Clock.

Hope this helps:

When replacing, verify polarity.

Good luck,

Gerry

If it only works when the car is running than it is wired wrong as mentioned above. You will need a non switched 12V source. If you cant find one, it is not that difficult to run one from the fuse panel. If it works after your car is shut off but trickles out than there is an issue with the clock unit or possibly your battery but if the car starts there should not be an issue with the battery.

Highlighted section is not necessarily true. I just went through this a couple of days ago and there is plenty of documentation on this forum. When the capacitors go bad the clock will work with the ignition on and not with it off. My car is/was wired correctly and until I replaced the capacitors the clock would not run with the ignition off. Yes I confirmed 12v with the ignition off. There are two positive leads connected to the back of the clock. Plus a ground and light.

I'm not near as well versed in electricity as I would like, but my assumption is that the ignition off lead is low amp draw and feeds the caps that feed the clock mechanism.

If you replace the caps don't do what I did and leave the tag ends long. Mine were shorting against the clock case. Once I figured that out and placed a small piece of rubber tape in the back of the case I was golden.
