Question Turbatrol oil cooler??

Does anyone have any experience with one?
Will it mount easily to my '80 SC??
Am looking to replace my stock loop cooler and can get a relativley unused Turbatrol from friend for little $$.

I use my car for DE's and Autocross events.
Do not race.

thanks for any advice,
Maurice

I've got one. I don't remember what the fitting issues were, but it works very well. Racerpartswholesale.com is a good source for the fittings and adapters (that is, if Pelican doesn't sell them).

It will make a difference but it will depend on how much air you can get to it. I cut out my headlight bucket, and then put a large hole in the valence. I'd say the cooler was worth 15 degrees, and each air mod another 15 degrees lower. (Completely unscientific)

Yeah I've one to on my 78SC. The PO put it on. It doesn't keep the temps as low as I'd like them to be during the Summer month Driver's Eds. It'll usually top out at 250 and then I'll need to reel it back in to keep it from going any higher. Of course the track where I usually run is a rather low speed course where you rarely get about 85-90 but are always on it hard. It would probably run cooler at one of the longer higher speed tracks.
Regardless, if money is an issue it definitely is an improvement over the stock trombone. If money isn't a big issue, and if I were going to do it, I'd opt for one of the bigger late model coolers with a fan.

RONinLB left here last night, after a BBQ meal. He's probably meandering his way to L.A. about now, to get his '77 fitted with new shoes, and to visit his brother. My point? His car runs that cooler, without fan. From NYC to here, though desert country, he told me temps were never a huge problem. IMHO, it's a huge step above the trombone cooler...and I'm basing this on what Ron told me...

I've got one on a 2.7. It was installed by a P.O. The intallation was done by someone that doesn't know much about air flow. It does seem to take a lot longer to warm up the oil. I'm using mobil1. I think however the non factory external thermostat may be stuck open. I'll know in a couple of days when I'll compare the temperatures of the tubes with the temperature guage through the warm up cycle.

I do believe that the terbatrol unit is better than the trombone cooler that I have on the '77 turbo.

Good luck,
David Duffield

This is also totally unscientific. I had a Carrera cooler on my 3.6, and then switched to a Turbatrol. In my opinion, the Carrera cooler did a better job. The Turbatrol seems to rely on ducted air slightly less, though, so it may be better for some applications.

I've got both the Turbatrol and the Carrera on the car, now -- one in each fender. For track days, I'm into ducting and airflow in a big way:
