centre mount front oil cooler
Since buying an RSR oil-cooler -original or replica - is out of my actual budget I'm looking for an acceptable alternative. e.g. adaption of an appropriate oil-cooler from an other car brand.
Is there anyone out there who has done such a job and is willing to share Infos and Pics ? Thanks in advance |

I believe that a few guys have used a cooler from a Mazda RX7 to some success but others will have more info than me.

I don't have pics handy as the cooler is buried behind the bumper, but I did exactly that. Bought a gen2 RX7 cooler, welded on AN12 bungs and ran SS line. It has been on my current track car for about 12 years without any issues, never runs above 210F. I spent $50 for the cooler and bought the fittings and lines from BAT in Florida.

Also interested in doing this. Will do some search but does this eliminate the trombone cooler?

Of course there's always this one from Earls for $300. It's what I am using up front:

I went the RX-7 route. To do it right adds to the cost.
$30 for a used RX-7 oil cooler. $40 for AN-16 weld on fittings $50 to have them welded on to the cooler. $125 for the four hose ends. $90 for seven feet of stainless braided AN-16 hose. $150 for a used fiberglass front bumper with a oil cooler cut out. $75 for paint and supplies to repaint the bumper $25 for some stainless screen for the bumper. And a couple of months of work, much of that for the custom fiberglass work on the bumper. ![]()

![]() ![]() Hi Gordon- It looks like you are using the SC or 3.2 Carrera oil hardlines along the rockers. From that point forward, can you show us how you routed your AN -16 hose over to the cooler & back? I am working on a 72 with a RS type bumper and it looks like the hoses must go outside the Rt battery box and then down under and into the bumper. It's really tight in there. Len ![]() |

I had one made out of 2 mercedes coolers.
Core dimensions 440x71x55 2 above each other, 1 pass coolers Works perfect, cheap and perfect fit in my IROC bumper. Many options are possible, starting from stock coolers. Google is your friend... André |

Sorry I don't have a picture with the bumper off. I am using the hard lines and thermostat from an SC. I removed the trombone and am using metric hose ends to hook up to the hard lines. The AN-16 stainless hose goes under the battery box and to AN fittings on the cooler. I removed the original fittings from the RX-7 cooler and had weld-on AN fittings installed. If the hose was more flexible they could go over the battery box.

Safe,
Sorry, don't have pics, but this is the cooler we started from, price in europe was 119€ for one cooler. Some fabrication has to be done to connect the inlet and outlet headers , and weld on nipples. No problem for a fabrication shop. Coolers are made out of alloy (good heat transfer, very light) This is the spec sheet ![]() |

Mercedes Benz oil cooler from their diesel engines can be found for decent prices. Made by Behr I'm using one on my 3.0 in a 914/6 works great and it's German.

![]() ![]() Tried to get a part Nr from our local M/B dealer and he could not help me. Of course, it was late in the day and he wanted to get out of town for the long Thanksgiving weekend. Can anyone provide a USA part Nr for this cooler, or a typical USA year & model? The PNs above are for a European model only, and its not stocked at Mercedes Benz USA. Thinking of running two of these in parallel as dede911 has done by making a Y connection at inlet & outlet of each. The 30mm Porsche feed & return can be split into two 22mm connections to these coolers without any restriction of the oil flow. Hoping it will give me more room getting around the front Right corner and into the RS front bumper. Len |
