found a plastic one, maybe the 930 version, used, fit like a champ.

Jeff,
I have the SC side pieces (engine sheetmetal that goes around the perimeter of the engine, and these are the two pieces next to the valve covers) that have the factory holes in them. I'll trade you the SC pieces for your factory '84 pieces. Or just take the SC pieces and compare the two to decide what you want to do. edit.......... Forgot to add that once you replace that left piece next to the engine fan, your heat effectiveness goes WAY down. Reason being is because once that left piece is no longer letting fan air, assisted by the extra blower in the engine bay, into the heat exchangers? Then you've got no "push" on the heated air. All you've got left in the system to get heat into the cabin is the small footwell blowers pulling air and convection. KEvin |
I'm backdated (SSI) with no footwell blower (83 SC body) and the air flow is enough to keep me warm at 0 degree with the top down :)

Yeah you've got no footwell blowers but at least the engine fan is pushing some air through your hoses. Claw's setup right now has nothing pushing any air into his crossover tube because the left side fan shroud has been replaced with a blockoff plate. So the only way heat would get into the cabin is via convection and whatever air the two footwell blowers can pull.

Good to know. I'll have to keep an eye out for a used one of the turbo part. didn't even see it listed in our host's catalog. In the meantime I'll see if my FrankenDuct will fit. If you happen to see a spare one lying around give me a shout :) |

This was supposed to be a simple backdate. :( |

looks like I had some Turbo bits in there. Must have been from when the PO put in the exhaust. This is what I took out (circled in yellow)
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1351278456.jpg If anybody has a boot (Pos 17) I'll buy or trade. I shortened mine up prematurely. Might have to rethink how the hose goes down there. |
The stuff circled in yellow is typical Carrera non-turbo stuff.

Thanks kevin. They had "930" part numbers so I thought that meant it was a turbo part. I'm hijacking my own thread but is there a rhyme or reason to using the "911" or "930" in the part numbers if some are interchangeable? |
Yeah the 930 prefix can be misleading. I think Porsche used the 930 prefix for 930-specific stuff initially and then when 930 & 911 parts were interchangeable, they just stuck with the 930 prefix where appropriate. But as time went on and parts evolved to being non-930-specific parts, alot still kept the 930 prefix. Like the heat tube parts for instance. Those don't fit a 930 but yet they have a 930 prefix!

FINALLY!
After much more "modification" than I expected, then some test fitting, and re-modification, the test fitting, and re-fitting, some bondo, sanding, primer, paint....it's finally together. The coil lead is a little tighter than I would like. The hose pushed the ignition wires just enough out of their position to make things interesting. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1351647461.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1351647479.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1351647495.jpg Went for a drive and I'm getting plenty of heat for what I need (no sub zero Chicago winter driving planned). It's more "radiant" heat than "blowing" heat. The rear heater blower would kick in around position 7 or 8 on the heater control knob. So basically I'm getting the same heat as I would in setting <7, which is fine. Next step is figure out what lever is for what in the defrost/vent/fan control and if all of those work right or not. I do seem to get some warm air coming out of the defroster vents but again, not a rush of warm air. The fan kicks in but doesn't seem to blow the hot air. |
Looks great, I took the last wire holder off and that gave me plenty of slack in the wires. I think I ran one or two of them under the heater hose also.

Rock on Jeff. Nice job. I was going to suggest the same as Erik- just leave the coil lead out of the wire loom & you'll be fine
The other controls are always confusing to people because the mixing panel is completely not intuitive. The two sliders control where heated air or ambient/cooled air are sent. I'm going by memory here, but I think the upper slider is cooled air and the lower slider is heated air, then.................. ah screw it. I'll do a search for ya instead. Here's a really good topic I found on it. The post by HarryD and the image in bart1's post are fantastico http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/524591-how-does-heating-system-work-74-89-a.html |
HarryD looks like hes got itall figured out. Thanks Kevin.
