3.2 Heat Backdate Confusion

I'm backdating my heat, and may even (likely) take out the AC, from my '84. I"ve purchased the left hand tin from out host, made some minor adjustments (bending and pounding) and got it to fit. I'm waiting for my SCAT hose to arrive.

My confusion, even after reading all the other "Heater backing dating" threads, is how the right side gets in there. I know our host sells the part but I just don't see how it goes in there. I don't even see how the ductwork on the right side would go to the heat exchangers. Even looking under the car. With the AC there, it doesn't look there is a spot for the tin or duct.

Am I missing something? Can others with a '84 3.2 share what they've done?

Thank you,

I think if you want to leave your stock exhaust you will only need to do the left side.

If you take out your a/c and backdate your exhaust to '74 is how you would do the right side. SSIs come to mind.

I'm sure others could give better advice. This is at least how I've thought about doing it to my '84.

Dean is correct. You also have to get engine tins with the hole for the hose to pass through when doing a full back date. You only do the one side if you have the stock exhaust headers.

I only did the left side on my 89 ... and you will need approx 12 inches of Scatt hose ...

Cheers !

Any of the pre 84 sheet metal will do for the right side. Left side you need the square panel with the 3 inch hole. You need the 90 degree elbow for each heat box.
I dont see what the fascination is for less heat.

the carrera heat tube that's behind the muffler needs to be removed. then you attach SC style elbows to the exchangers in it's place. swap in the side tins with the holes for the hoses and you're in business. the last right side backdate outlet i got from pelican was clocked up way too high and the A/C bracket didn't fit, so i had to cut and reweld it to clear.

As long as I stick with the stock exhaust, re-direct the air on the left side only. I still get some heat, right?

john walker's workshop 10-23-2012 05:33 PM

the cross pipe goes away and you use tin with the hole and an elbow. so you get left heat then. problem is the right exchanger needs air blowing through it regardless, because that keeps things cooler. you will get the right heads and cylinders a lot hotter if you don't. the job needs to be done completely.

right side

I don't have AC, and i do have SSI's, but here is the right side heat backdate tin on my 3.2

Al

What doesn't make sense, as long as I have the stock exhaust ( I think I do), the right side never had any air blowing through it anyway.

There is a pipe under your tin that directs air to both sides from your single left side outlet. If I remember correctly.

Right, there is a crossover pipe so if you do just one side up top it should get air out both sides of the heat exchangers. Interesting idea that JW mentions, Any body have a picture with the SC elbows on the exchangers? Is there a weight savings? I probably just need SSIs.

Fabspeed provides a nice thick rubber crossover tube with their header systems when you purchase headers with heat provision,i'll try to load a picture today ...
Yes it do get heat,it's plenty to keep a windshield fog free !

Cheers !

I just got a new phone, or else I would. You could always just get a bent tube with the proper diameter and radius, use a hose clamp to hold in place.

I don't know why there is a myth that you get less heat. I have to shut my heat off or open the windows it gets so hot inside.

Elombard 10-24-2012 09:06 AM

I know - I dont know why Porsche even added a blower motor there is a ton of heat coming out of there. Maybe in real cold climates at idle its a problem.

au contraire.

Here's a shot of the underside of my car. You can see the pipe coming down from above and the crossover pipe.

Thank you,

I did the same and removed my AC compressor in an effort to lose weight. i made my tins very easily and still have the left hand side one.

Very nice looking motor you have.

Thanks Fixer. However, this "little" project is turning into a PITA. The metal backdate piece needed more modifications than I thought. Been trying to narrow it down a good part of my free time tonight. It interferes with the distributor. Also, you'll need more hose than you think.

I've had to reshape the tin and repaint it. Crossing my fingers it all goes together tomorrow.

john walker's workshop 10-26-2012 04:29 AM

the left outlet looks better if you cut a curve out of it and weld in a piece of sheet metal. or you can buy the turbo one from porsche that is already cut out $$$.
