my car is driving so well I want to drive it all the time, problem is the temp gets up to 250. What should I do, cant foot the cash for the cooler just yet, but I want to drive the car. Should I worry about this?

Tom, unless you are driving hard in very hot weather, I have a hard time believing that your oil temp must climb that high. I've got to believe there is a cooling problem. Perhaps some of our hot-climate brethren will correct me though.

I'm no expert on the early cars, heck I'm not an expert on any of the cars. But I would put a new sending unit in first, and check it with a pyrometer. To ensure you are really running that hot. I had a similar problem with my car, where it appeared to be running hotter than it was, when in reality it was running about 30F cooler. And if you don't have the numerical gauge ( I think your car does) I would change that at the same time. Because 250 is to damn hot. ------------------ Matt Chamblin 78 911 SC |

overdrive the fan with an SC large crank pulley. and if that doesn't get it down to you're satisfaction, install a 77 fan/ pulley combo. it's got a smaller pulley than your engine. more airflow always helps. 20° is not uncommon with the full conversion.

Everything seems to be in order, yes I have a numerical guage ( says 250 ), I have headers so nothing to worry about there. I have noticed that the rear gets very hot from the muffler, its bubleing the paint by the license plate some. I really just need to get a freakin front cooler, soon I hope. I would change to mobil one if I did not think it would all run out the bottom. Its just freakin hot here in houston right now so I may have to live with it. Maybe I just need a cool collar... Thanks for the input, I may order another sending unit just to be sure, its cheap enough(yes warren were going on a huntin trip now).....

Another possibility is your oil thermostat. Could be you need to change that. I had the same problem & nothing seemed to help. I was describing it to a mechanic & he suggested a new thermostat. It dropped the temperature 20 to 30 degrees. ------------------ Marv Evans '72 911E |

You have problems that a front cooler is just going to hide. First you need to make sure your gauge is accurate. Next, as previously suggested, make sure your oil thermostat is opening. Also, make sure your timing is not too far advanced or the fuel mixture too lean, both cause an engine to run hotter. I live in Missouri and we have been having days in the mid to upper 90's with 90% humidity and it is a rare day that I see 210 degrees on my gauge. Most times it runs from 200-205 degrees.
